My 6 year-old cat Spencer had a urinary blockage (his first) over Christmas, was successfully unblocked, and spent a week at the emergency 24-hr vet on an IV, etc.

I had posted on this forum several times during this ordeal, and everybody was so helpful, thank you so much [emoji]9829[/emoji]

Spencer came home December 31st and despite a few issues with his meds causing him not to eat, he did fine eventually and was thriving.

On January 28 I had a follow-up appointment with Spencer. He lost a lot of weight – 5 lbs – during his hospitalization, but the vet was pleased with it actually – he had been overweight at 21 lbs before his illness, and is now a still-overweight but slimmer 16 lbs.

During this visit the vet did a blood test to check his kidneys, and extracted urine for an analysis.

Spencer’s results came back J spectacular J: great kidney values, no crystals in his urine, no trace of UTI, perfect urine PH. Upon exam his bladder was found to be back to normal size (it had stretched during the blockage) and he had no temperature.

Bottom line, everything was fine, no reason for mommy to worry, right?

Now fast forward 2 weeks: this weekend Spencer started acting strange. The best way I can describe it is that he looks moody, like when cats keep their ears horizontal?

He looks like he’s in pain, but I’ve felt him all over and he doesn’t meow or yelp . If he’s hurting, I cannot find where.

He’s not playing anymore, although he perks up and follows the laser pointer with his eyes but he doesn’t run after it the way he used to.

He jumps on the windowsill, on the bed etc., without problem and seemingly painlessly.

He eats but it’s been decreasing since yesterday: he ate a bit of dry food yesterday and a bit of wet, this morning a bit of wet only (he’s on urinary SO).

He’s peeing fine. I wouldn’t be typing this – I’d be at the emergency clinic – if I suspected he was blocked but I’ve been following him to the litter box yesterday & today and he pees, in good amounts, without strain.

Basically the problems are: decrease of activity level/”grumpiness” look on his face + decrease in appetite. I’m not taking any chances (I’ve learned) and I called the vet, and we are going for a check-up at 5:00 pm today (it’s noon here right now).

In the meantime, I thought I would ask you guys, as you have been so much help in the past, does anybody has any idea what’s up with Spencer? I would appreciate any advice.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, he has a slight eye discharge in only one eye. It’s not a lot but he didn’t have it until recently.

Sorry to hear about Spencer.

He could actually have an URI or something similar; any sneezing?  (If a cat can't smell well, he won't be as interested in eating.)

Very glad you're taking him to the vets.  Let us know what he/she says.

Hi Ritz :) How's your kitty doing? (wasn't he/she sick, I think I remember from previous posts)

Actually I thought of a UTI, he does look like someone who's feeling crappy with the flue.

I really find it so weird that only 2 week after such good test results, he looks sick again :( I don't think it's another blockage, because he is acting completely different than he was when he was blocked - but I kind of worry about his liver & his kidneys... I'm also worried, if it's an UTI and they prescribe Clavamox again, because he had nausea with it before and he's already eating less now... Arghhhh. Can't wait to get to the vet, not knowing is the worst.

Cats are nortious for hiding pain!  How long was he at the vets; you know what they say:  a good place to get really sick is to be hospitalized!

As your vet for different kind of antibiotic; depending on the type of UTI, sometimes antibiotics aren't needed.

Ritz got over her throwing up fast; thanks for asking.

But, and as I posted on another thread, I'm really worried she has feline hyperesthesia syndrome.  Some of the symptoms fit, some don't; frequency jumped dramatically after she had a rabies shot two weeks ago.

Yeah and that's why it kindof annoys me to have to bring him back to the vet :( He was at the emergency vet for 6 or 7 days and then had 2 follow-ups at the regular vet.

I'm foreseeing another blood test tonight, hopefully that will tell us what's wrong :(

I hope Ritz get better too!

Good luck - just a year ago I went through a series of very similar episodes with my Bonaparte. But after two flushings of his system he again peed blood all over the floor and eventually had to be operated on for stones in his bladder. He has been fine since but is on a urinary diet for the rest of his life, including low calcium water. I hope you find the answers to your problems tonight.

Well... I came home from work early to take Spence to his vet appointment, and he looks 100x better. Almost back to normal, except he didn't eat more than a few bites... None of the lethargy anymore. I'm taking him to the vet anyway, to be in the safe side, but I'm feeling much better than this morning!

The bad news first: Spencer lost a whole pound since his last vet visit 2 weeks ago :( he's now 15 lbs.
The GOOD news now: all that's wrong with him is a mild case of UTI. The vet prescribed some celenia which I hope will help his nausea... Eat Spencer eat!

Yeah Spencer.  URIs are better than crystals (weird saying that...)

And when Ritz wants too much food I worry; and when she doesn't want to eat, I worry even more!

I know right? I used to worry that he was overweight, now I'd give anything to see him pig out like he used to :(

My mother has a cat that has this issue, he has been to the vet twice for a blockage of his urinary tract. Our vet  has him on special cat food that should prevent the crystals from forming and thus far he has been ok. I remember just how bad he was the first time this happened to him so I hope the best for your cat.

What jumps out at me is the weight loss in December. If I understood the post correctly he lost 5 pounds in less than a month? And now another pound? That is a very serious dangerous weight loss, in a cat. Even more dangerous in an overweight cat. I urge you to take him back and insist the vet do a full blood work up to check his liver.

Cats who lose weight too quickly can develop fatty liver disease (feline hepatic lipidosis). It is reversible if caught in time.

Otto, a full blood work was done and nothing was found.

He lost 5 lbs during and following the blockage. He was then stable at 16 lbs and now in the past few days he started eating a lot less, that's probably when the other lb came off. He has a mild UTI, but because he is not vomiting, no diareha and no fever, the vet didn't want to give him antibiotics. The vet gave me cerenia (celenia??) for a few days, because Spencer licks his lips like he's nauseous, hopefully the pills will help.

It's definitely not a bladder problem this time, we did a urine analysis and he has perfect PH, no crystals, no UTI, bladder normal size.
