Our cat, Syyd, is usually very playful and spry.  Always purring. He is an indoor only cat. One day he stopped eating and drinking.  We took him to the emergency room after a full day of that.  He's not vomiting and appears to still be urinating but not having bowel movements.  I have been feeding him Hill's A/D cat food that the Doc gave us and giving him water.

The Doc wanted to do blood work, but it was far too expensive for us.  Syyd was administered subcutaneous fluids and given an antibiotics shot.  How long will it take to see an improvement?  Syyd had a fever of 104.5 when we took him in.  He seems not be as hot now.  He's also still sweet, but all he's doing is sleeping.  No jaundice in his ears and the doc said that his gums/teeth look ok.

I am going to try getting baby food to see if he likes that better.  The bottom line was that the Doc couldn't really tell us much.  If anyone has any insight or thinks they know what might be the problem, please let me know.  We'll be able to take him to the regular vet, but we can only afford so much more :(  Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

My Rosie came down with a cold a week past Friday and she went off her food and water. The vet gave her an anabolic steroid to jump start her appetite, but she also had an anti sickness shot because she had been vomiting.

Rosie had to have sub-q fluids to stop her dehydrating, but l had the blood work done as well.

Because of the steroid shot she finally started eating and drinking a week later, but only a couple of treats every couple of hours to get her stomach used to food again.

Can you take her to see another vet to get another opinion, because although my vet said he's seen cats go without food and water 5-6 days they will need some help eventually, and that's why he put the sub-q fluids in her just to see her through

Thank you for replying!

We're probably going to have to get him to a regular Vet.  We took him to the emergency animal hospital and they did their best.  Unfortunately today he hasn't been keeping his food down.  This is bad news.  I wish there was something we could do to help him, other than what we've already done.  I also wish money wasn't a factor in this equation.  I've learned of care credit, which is something that can help us make payments on our vet bill which is nice.

Thanks so much for chiming in and sharing.  I hope your kitty is doing better <3

Have they (the vet) checked for an obstruction or intestinal intercusseption (intestinal twisting)? This is not to say that that is what's causing the issue because these symptoms apply to many conditions, but lack of appetite and bowel movements, listlessness, vomiting were also present there. We did an X ray (combined with symptom reports) to suggest this diagnosis, but I think an ultrasound is sometimes needed (which is more expensive than a simple X Ray at the normal vet). We ultimately just went into surgery without ultrasound, because he was getting worse (intestinal twisting without obstruction items was the ultimate diagnosis with no known cause). Hope you figure it out and get relief for your kitty!
