I have been feeding a Ferel cat for 4 years. He was recently trapped, neutered, and returned. He has been living on my Sun porch non stop since. I noticed today that he has developed ear mites and can't hear at all. How can I treat this without getting scratched or bit by him?

Does he let you touch him at all? If you can get close enough to drip something on the back of his neck, ask your vet (or the TNR organization) for some Revolution.

If you can't even get that close, try crushing up a Capstar and putting it in his food. It works better for fleas but I've heard that it has some effect on ear mites. Worth a try anyway.

Oh, he lets me pet him! I have no clue how to get in touch with TNR here in Old Bridge. Tried looking it up, but don't see anything. I just noticed his stitches and his testicles gone. He also has the tip of his ear snipped. So if I put this "Revolution" on his back it will kill the mites???

Definitely, Revolution. That kills the ear mites and any other pests, internal too. We have one feral inside we still can't touch but snuck up on her while she was sleeping and shot the back of her neck with a syringe of Revolution.

She had earmites too. All gone.

Yes, Revolution is an effective "spot on", some few drops on the neck, or rather, between the shoulders... Takes almost all; outside parasites, most worms.  Not so effective only to tape worm.

Takes mites as you ask about...

Revolution is nowadays prescription free, got free perhaps two years ago.  So you can buy it yourself if you wish.  If you can get it in a big pet shop, or if you must buy it in pharmacia, I dont know.   :)

Make sure it is the variation for cats.

One problem, if he has so much mites he cant hear, it has gone very far.  You must perhaps contact a vet anyway.

Good luck!

It is our American Forumites who told me it is now prescription free in USA, so this has nothing to do with my living in Sweden.   :)

Possibly they changed back the regulations.   I shall try to look into it.  Tx for telling.

But still - could you please check with your  hard copy pharmacist? Phone and ask.

It may be the online place who has old text.

Maybe you're thinking of another product? Revolution is a heartworm preventive, which is required by law in the U.S. to be prescription-only. But my vet hands it out pretty freely. So it doesn't hurt to ask.

Since you can pet your feral cat now, then go for the Revolution. You must apply it in three weeks not four to treat ear mites and mange. Make sure you apply it to the back of the skull. If you apply it between the shoulder blades he will lick off the product. Be prepared with the application already to dispense and gently pet with the hand that will apply the product under the fur close to the skin. As you are petting, try to part the hair a bit and be quick with the application. Good luck! :)

Also another tip when you squeeze the tube to apply the Revolution, keep it squeezed as you move the tube away from the cat.   If you squeeze it and let it go while it's in position it'll suck some of the product back in and make a squeaky noise startling the cat....you can guess how I know.

It does require a prescription but as so Willowy said most vets give it pretty freely. I have obtained it for my ferals twice without his ever

seeing any of them. Just call up or go in and ask for it.
