Hi everyone!

Our 16 year old cat has liver and kidney problems. We had to stop feeding her meat a month ago. For a few days she has been licking the same spot on a tile on the outdoor terrace.

She is constantly crying to get the door to the terrace opened like drug addict, licks the tile for a minute than leaves. Its -1 C / 31 F outside. Might she be cooling her tongue?

Does anyone have an idea whats happening to her?

Thank you very much!

I have no idea about the tile licking, except that some cats eat strange things like clay litter when they have anemia (anemia can be a side effect of kidney disease). Has she had blood work done recently?

I'm wondering what you mean when you say you had to stop feeding her meat? What was she eating before, and what does she eat now?

Cindy was doing that, licking one spot on the carpet and eating pieces of cardboard from her scratchy.  She has stopped since the surgery to remove the mast cell tumor in her abdomen (which we didn't know she had when she started the behavior).  She had a blood test and wasn't anemic.  So I guess that any time your cat starts to do something out of the ordinary like that, probably wouldn't hurt to visit the vet.  That said, however, none of them associated the behavior with anything other than possible anemia.

Licking outside tile can be a sign of anemia, I believe.  There is something in the tile, or concrete even, they their bodies crave.  I would get her to the Vet ASAP because anemia can be life threatening, and you've already said she has liver and kidney issues.  If nothing else, I would give my Vet a call and discuss this with them.
