So yesterday as I was stocking up on cat food, I took some of yalls advice, and decided to get some Salmon oil, so i could add DHA and extra fat to Lily & Callie's diet. Lily, will not TOUCH her food with salmon oil. This little girl is driving me nuts! On the other hand surprisingly, Callie REALLY liked it. Shes the one thats on the thin side, and doesn't eat very much. And she ate ALL of her plate, plus what Lily didn't touch, so instead of taking it back, I'll add it to Callies food. It looks like I Finally found a way to get Callie to eat more
I just wish Lily wasn't so stubborn and eat it too. I guess I just have to accept that my little booger will not eat kitten food, and shes doing okay with eating adult food now (She is 6 months now)

I also got L-Lysine treats. When I brought Lily home in September, she had a BAD upper respitory infection, and that was treated and she got better, but now every so often her eyes get really gooey and crusty, but shes not sick like she was, so I believe she has the feline herpes, and L-Lysine helps with that. I can happily say I was able to trick her with that, and gave her a few of her regular treats, with a few soft treats, and the L-Lysine treat along with them, she didn't notice the difference. So my big bill at Petsmart yesterday wasn't a complete waste :-D

For your Lily, consider adding just a drop of the salmon oil at first. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting them used to it very slowly, and veeeery gradually increasing the amount. :)

I just got some of that also because the vet recommended it for Casper.  He turned his nose up at his food when I put it on it.

However, Cocoa walked over to his dish, and was more than happy to eat it.  Except she isn't the one who needs it.

I think I'll take LDG's advice, and try much less next time, not the recommended amount.  If I could smell it, surely it had to ruin the flavor of the food.  I just think Cocoa didn't mind because she was living on the street for a long while, and probably got used to eating nearly anything she was able to.

sivyaleah, you're using the salmon oil for Casper's arthritis? If so, I HIGHLY recommend trying NOW Neptune Krill Oil instead. Flowerbelle is missing most of the ball joints in her hips. We saw no real difference in her mobility with salmon oil, but saw a real improvement in her jumping within just three days of putting her on the krill oil. She hated it, so I was just pilling her with the 500mg capsule. But she's got an issue with her throat, so I had to start squeezing it onto her food. I started with the one drop, and slowly worked up to the whole pill, and she eats it all now.

I am LDG.  I know it was recommended to use the krill oil, I haven't been able to get out to purchase it yet.  I work full time in NYC and my hours are heinous.  I haven't given Casper the other oil since he stuck his nose up in the air lol.

If you have a reputable online source for it, let me know.  I'll just go ahead and get it that way.

Edit:  Duh.  Just saw you wrote the actual name of the product.  I'm at my desk scoffing down lunch; trying to leave early because of the pending snow storm here in the northeast.  Totally missed it.  I'll do a search for it

Amazon is your best bet!  That's where I got mine...same exact stuff as LDG uses.

Thanks!

I should probably take it also

I had the meniscus removed from both knees in two separate surgeries years apart.  I'm rather sure I was told one of them has arthritis settling in, and it really bothers me quite a bit these days.

May have to share the bottle with my boy

 You should! Gary and I both take it - don't know what the "meniscus" is, but Gary had the cartilage removed from both knees, and the krill oil helps him tremendously.

Thank you laurie for the salmon oil.

Sorta thank you for the salmon oil that always gets on my fingers when snipping the tip.

To the orignal poster, if your cats like treats, super, but for easier and more consistent delivery I suggest

Vetoquinol Viralys (L-Lysine).
Its the same company but in powder form. It has a meaty smell. This way you can focus better quality treats, like freeze dried beef hearts and duck hearts.

My kittens get 2 scoops (adult dose) in each meal, they share.

I cant speak for the salmon oil problem, other than your cat will eat, my older lady is notorious for rejecting, and being just fine without eating.

I suggest, assuming you rotate wet food to offer the cat two dishes, both with salmon oil, so she knows she has a choice, I would assume that choice would overpower her aversion to salmon oil.

Also, other than Lovaza (RX fish oil), this oil is the only one i trust anymore for my own use.

:lol3: I puncture the capsule with a knife - the krill oil gets on my fingers tips because the capsule is smaller, but the salmon oil doesn't. :)

I take my newish cheapo kitchen shears, slice open the HT chub, then snip the tip of the salmon oil.

I would use a knife but I would cut myself

Wait, maybe I could do it by sawing through it with a serated knife.

I also bought cuticle scissors but they are missing.

I really need to cut down on dishes, yes I have a washer, but two kittens will produce 3 dirty bowls, 3-6 dirty spoons, dirty scissors, school lunch trays (awesome!) and a 1 qt pyrex bowl I use to mix the chub.

Back to oil, I wonder if krill is as unstable as fish oil,  I know they both come from the ocean.  I just know that you once said Krill tabs were hard as a rock.

Also do you think the cat's, if they notice taste at all choose salmon or krill?

Meniscus = cartilage

I had all of it removed from both knees.  One tore completely from bending down to pick up my 3 year old niece (that was like 16 years ago!).

The other, a work related accident where I got my leg totally twisted around a step stool.  Completely messed up my whole leg, hamstrings, knee, black and blue like nobodies business.  Was laid up for a full month before I even had surgery on that one!

Ok, back to you're regularly scheduled cat conversations
