i have a wonderful  eight year old cat who has been sneezing and coughing for the past six months. he has been to the vet many times for this and is currently on orbax and clindimiacin and chloratrimaton. nothing seems to really help. the discharge from his nose is thick and brownish, like glue. the only change in his daily life is that before we lost our other cats to old age and disease i started feeding the one who wouldn't eat fancy feast wet food. norman liked it too and so i began giving him some even after the others had died. for eight years he ate only purina one chicken and rice and was perfectly healthy and happy. could he be allergic to the fancy feast.?

Allergies are certainly a possibility. Have you tried changing the food back to what he had before?

I have 2 cats with chronic herpes. The major symptoms of an outbreak are sneezing and watery eyes. The only thing that keeps it under control is L-lysine given on a daily basis. (herpes is a virus so antibiotics didn't do anything at all for it)

Don't stop the antibiotics without checking with your vet first. I would recommend asking about herpes.

Hi, welcome to TCS!  I used to have a cat who was allergic to flowers (or I guess pollen).  He would go around smelling the flowers in the yard and then start sneezing.  But nothing nearly as severe as the situation you have described.  I wish I could be of help, but I don't know much about what would be causing your cat to sneeze and cough.  Have they done any treatment on him for possible asthma?

Please keep us posted on the results.  I hope it will only be a matter of matching the right antibiotic to the right germ and an easy fix.  That's pretty much the way it works with wound cultures in humans.  (I know a lot more about human medicine than I do about veterinary medicine...I sometimes feel so inadequate when faced with cat health questions.)

well the vet just called with the lab results and norman has pseudomonas. i am going to pick up the antibiotic now.  he says it's difficult to clear up and that there are only a few meds that will address the bacteria. no liquid meds which would be so much easier and the shots which i could do would put his kidneys at risk.  where does this come from? anyone know?
