Hi there.  Wellington is FIV+ and is 4 years old.  He has never been sick or had any trouble going to the bathroom.  Perfect!  He is a former feral that I tamed and took him off the streets.  When he was feral his eyes were very teary (especially the left - it would run with a rusty colored liquid.  And he was a bit cross eyed.  I'm certain he has herpes.

Once I got him indoors and started caring for him the eye issues cleared up and he is no longer cross eyed.  His left eye still gets teary from time to time.

I give him a good "once over" every day, and a few months ago I noticed a red streak in his left iris (his eyes are blue).  Took him to the vet for an exam and tonometer readings (eye pressure) were completely normal.  The vet noticed some correlating scratch marks on his left ear and determined that herpes may have flared up and he scratched his eye.  It came on suddenly.  Vet said there was no swelling or oozing or pain.  We decided to wait and see.

I downloaded Veterinary Opthalmology books and read them in 2 days.  One thing that stuck out to me was the neovascularization is a sign of healing and that is exactly what his symptom looks like.  Right where the iris meets the sclera, there are blood vessels branching out toward the pupil.

I've just now noticed that he might be slightly worse than before, so I'm going to take him back to the vet and ask for blood work to rule out systemic cause.  He may refer me to a vet Opthalmologist - and that scares me a little.  Scared I will get really, expensive, bad news.

Wellington's behavior hasn't changed at all.  He is a happy, playful, purring, ball of love.  Vet visits stress him out a great deal and I hate to have to put him through that.  But I must.  I will attach a pic, a few weeks after the onset.  He is looking out a window and you can see the red streak in his left eye at about 4'oclock.  It is a line that goes from the outer edge of the iris towards the pupil.  I should say his pupil is functioning normally as well.  Have any of you ever seen anything like this?

I have no experience with this, but you have a beautiful kitty. I'm sending you good vibes for a good vet visit.

Well it does indeed appear to be neovascularization.  Did the Vet give you any medication to put in his eyes since he thought Wellington had scratched himself?  Does he seem to be at all bothered by it now, since you said you think it's gotten a little worse?

Since he's had a couple of Herpes flare-ups, have you thought about giving him L-Lysine ?  Several people here have kitties with Herpes, and I think most of them give them the L-Lysine all the time as a precautionary measure, then if they have flare-ups, they increase the dosage.  I believe the normal dosage is 500 mg split between 2 meals, then up to 1000 during flare-ups.  What L-Lysine does is really help boost their immune system.  Anyway, since you're taking him back to the Vet, you could ask about that.

BTW, Wellington is one handsome little beastie

I certainly hope it is neovascularization and not some tumor.  We'll check the eye pressure again tomorrow, as well as some blood work to see if anything is going on.  Hoping, hoping, hoping for good news.  Thank you for the reminder about L-Lysine.  I have given it in the past, but have since switched to Lactoferrin.  I will now be adding both.  I love my baby - I just don't want him to be uncomfortable.
