Ok, so a week or so ago a stray cat that I have been caring for, for a year or so went missing. We thought the worst until earlier today he showed up at our front door very skinny and with a missing tail. It looked somewhat fresh (1 or 2 weeks) and he seems fine. Is there anything to do that would help him recover more or to get food in him?

can you trap him and get him to a vet? i would be very concerned about possible bacterial infection entering at the wound. feral cats do seem to have amazing immune systems but that is a pretty severe trauma for him.

:yeah: I second this advice. Feral cats do tend to heal amazingly well, surprisingly so. But, this could turn into a very serious infection if not already and that could make this cat suffer a terrible death if he does not get treatment for infection. Try to trap this cat. OR start to feed him inside of a medium sized crate. Will he eat with you sitting nearby? Because then you just close the crate door once he is used to going in and eating in the crate with you sitting right there. It would be best for this cat to get medical attention, one way or another. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
