One of my cats has been itchy some days and not at all other days. It seems to be when he eats chicken. It's not severe, but of course I don't want to feed him something that makes him uncomfortable.

I'm a little concerned about him gaining weight because I don't want to feed too much lamb or duck. They are fattier than chicken. He's not overweight now. I do use LID venison too and some fresh venison once in a while.

For those of you dealing with chicken allergies, what canned food do you feed? Is your cat okay with turkey or quail? Or do they cause a reaction too?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sorry, but I don't have any suggestions for you, just a question. How do you know if any itching is allergy related? My cat has always scratched at herself some, but I haven't noticed it any more after eating certain foods. I'm not sure how much scratching is normal and how much is caused by food allergies? Does he scratch at himself immediately after eating and that's how you can tell?

I don't know if it's an allergy for sure, but I'm going to avoid chicken completely for a while and see what happens. Then I'll know. It's not severe at all so I won't put him through a vet trip for this but just don't want to feed him anything that makes him uncomfortable. The reason I think it's chicken is that when I started feeding more of the other meats like lamb and venison and less chicken he wasn't scratching as much. A noticeable difference.

I have 2 cats and the other one hardly scratches at all. Neither did my old cat. This little guy definatelly scratches more than either of the others so that is also what makes me think he might have an allergy.

I guess I'll know soon enough.

I think grains are the reason behind most cat allergies so that's great he's off them and feeling better. You could try eliminating one meat at a time from his diet to see if the flare-ups stop completely. Then you'll know for sure. what the problem is.

Have you been out cruisin' with Jazmine yet?

That is interesting. Please do keep us updated. My cat is also on grain free and being transitioned to raw. The only thing that's really carried over so far is chicken, and she's scratching about the same so I'm not sure if that's just normal for her or if it is an allergy of some type.

Interesting situation. He itches when fed poultry... I think whether or not feeding him other poultry would depend upon how the food is processed and what antigens are filtered and/or eliminated during processing. That said, I would keep him off of poultry altogether to try and get an accurate picture of what is going on. Lamb, beef, venison, fish (in moderation) etc. If all of the other meats were wet foods with grains as was the chicken, then a grain allergy may not be it; it may just be a chicken allergy.

The best way to know for sure is through an allergy test with the vet. You indicated you were going to have that done. Until then, I would just eliminate the chicken. I would not eliminate any of the other foods he eats whether it contains grain or not. If you begin eliminating too many things you will never know for sure which ingredient he is actually allergic to. Only the tests will be able to determine for sure if it's an allergy. Best of luck to you and please do keep us posted.

I have been through all of this with my cat. We did elimination diets and eventually ended up only on hydrolyzed protein food. Your vet can test for external allergies, but there is no reliable test for food allergies. The only good option is an elimination diet, which is basically what you are suggesting with removing chicken from your cat's diet.

I think it's a great idea! Your vet can always give you more advice, though. We started out on novel proteins, but my cat eventually developed allergies to all poultry and most fish and red meats. He also is allergic to some squashes (discovered this by using different brands of canned pumpkin - it turns out some brands add other kinds of squash as well!) and probably starches. If your cat has something like this, a grain-free diet would not be enough.

Your vet is always best!

Hi Mewlittle! :hi: Yes, I have an account on Catster under "Ramsey". I seldom get over there anymore. Seems like that site has kind of gotten real slow this past year. Maybe it's just the forums I go into. I am not active there as of late. TCS is my favorite cat site

Thank you so much for starting this topic!  My cat is allergic to chicken - I know this for sure - and I'm having a lot of trouble finding her something to eat as she is also, as luck would have it, a very picky creature :) I also have a very limited number of options for grain and chicken free food. Royal Canine hypoallergenic - the only one available in Serbia - has chicken fat, Hill's has hydrolyzed chicken liver as well as chicken liver aroma (I'm not sure if that will bother her) and Farmina's Vet Life seems awful and she refuses to eat it :) Her stool also becomes soft when eating Farmina :) Has anyone had any experience with The Taste of the Wild in this case? Also, any recipe for cooked food will be more than welcome, as well as any advice, as I'm slowly becoming desperate :D
