I have done this and I used the Fels Naptha laundry soap. My friend used the Ivory. She gave me some of hers to try. I like this I made better. The Fels gives it a really nice clean smell. Also when you read this link, pay attention to the tip that says instead of downy, use 1/2 cup white vinegar in the downy ball for in place of a fabric softener. I was told that the price of the laundry soap averages a penny a load.

My mom used to make all of our soaps from bath to laundry. She didn't use soap flakes, she made all of the soap from scratch using raw materials.

My grandmother did too. They called it lye soap. That is a bit too primitive for me. She used a wash tub and a wash board. I don't want to go there.:lol3:

I've considered it but I don't know that I do enough laundry to make it worth my time and effort. I don't think 20 cents a load is going to bankrupt me :lol3:. Maybe if I had a pack of kids and did 5 loads a day. . .

But I do use vinegar in my Downy ball :tongue2:.

That sounds interesting, but I don't know that I'm gung-ho enough to try it. We do do a lot of laundry, though, within one week.

My grandma had the old wringer-type washer when I was a child. I helped her with the laundry and it was a chore.
