This is my first ever thread, so please bear with me because I'm not sure quite how to do this. I have a 4 month old Scottish Fold named Newman who is everything to me. He seems active, healthy, and happy. I even took him to the vet recently and she said that he's in perfect health. However, every time I touch his tail, he runs away from me and makes a tiny meow. This is strange for him because he's usually a very quiet kitty and only meows when he's really distressed. He's extremely cuddly so the fact that he's running away for something as small as a touch of the tail also seems strange. Sometimes I'll pet his tail lightly to see if he feels pain in a specific spot and he'll only occasionally react this way. But at the same time, sometimes I'll notice him chewing on a specific part of his tail. My boyfriend says that he probably just doesn't like us touching his tail very much. But I have this terrible feeling that he might be in pain. At the same time, I tend to over worry. I recently took him to the vet and spent 70 dollars, all for a small rug burn on his paw. It doesn't seem to be bleeding, swollen, or broken in any way. What should I do? Does it seem serious enough to need a vet appt.? I also have to go get his booster shots and neuter him soon so I was thinking of just having them look at him then. But I just don't know if I'm being a worry wart or if this could be something serious and should be looked at immediately and exclusively.

Sincerely,

A worried first-time kitty owner

Most cats don't like to have their tails touched. It's a very sensitive part of the body. But it wouldn't hurt to ask the vet the next time you're in---I don't think it's worth making an appointment just for that but if you're in for his shots or something.

I don't have any advice or knowledge, neither of my cats are bothered by my touching or petting their tails, but I know what it's like to be a worry wart (DH says I'm not happy unless I have something to worry about), so I thought I'd send a vibe or two that it's nothing serious!

Thanks Misty8723! It helps a lot hearing that from a fellow worry wart :)

None of my cats mind me petting their tails. They're all neutered/spayed if that makes a difference.

Is there any way you can examine his tail gently, maybe when he's sleeping? Just look at it in the light and try to see how the skin looks under the fur. When in doubt, take them to the vet....
