Stella is scheduled to be spayed on Wednesday.  The clinic says that animals should not have food past midnight before the surgery, but that puppies and kittens 4 months and younger may have food until 6 AM before.  I'm not sure of Stella's exact age, but my best estimate has her at four months, turning 5 months within a week or so after her spay.  Should I follow the guidelines provided for animals ages 5 months or older (12 AM) or those provided for kittens 4 months and younger (6 AM)

I want to make sure that she is not fed too soon before her spay, but I also don't want her to be without food for too long at a young age.  She's right at the cutoff point, so I'm not quite sure.

It's probably worth calling the clinic and getting their advice but if they aren't sure I would probably err on the side of caution and not give anything to eat or drink after midnight. I think the risk is that if there is anything in their systems they may throw it up and then choke while under the anesthesia.

 For Stella's surgery!

I am going to call them in a little while, but I wanted to get some other opinions.  I was also leaning towards the "nothing after midnight", but she is still fairly young.

Thanks for the good vibes!

I would just leave her with ~15 crunchies at 12AM. If there is still some left take it away at 6AM. That way she is left only with very little food after 12, but she can at least have a little bit before 6. I don't think that would harm her...

if you're concerned then by all means follow the vets advice.

Best of luck for the surgery Stella!!

This is the most sensible advice - ask the vets.
