His inflamed gums are much better.

Backstory: Over a month ago I started a thread about Mr Poe's red and angry looking gums, which was discovered during a regular health check. Vet said maybe stomatitis, and said something about bortadella. He was put on azithromax, and I also began to give him l-Lysine, 250 mg twice / day

He finished the antibiotic 10 days ago and was back today for a recheck. Looks much improved but still just a little red along the gum line.

I asked about giving him something to chew on, we discussed it briefly, and vet said chicken wing joint, the smallest one, would be good.  He adores venison when I'm cutting it up so I don't think this will be an issue getting him to gnaw on it.

He gets 2 small cans of wet and 2 Tablespoons of dry every day, divided into 4 servings. I am not switching him to raw, just planning on supplementing with raw chicken wing, the smallest joint.

So now that we've reached the end of this loooong preamble - how much / many chicken wing joints should I feed him? One per day? Every day? A few times per week? Or . . .  ?

TIA for your suggestions / advice.

I would probably just give him one every couple of days, but why not just call your Vet and ask him what he suggests?

Hi MrsGreenJeans and thank you for a reply.

Many people here feed raw. Mny people here have cats with stomatitis.

Thinking of it as a Venn diagram I figured there might be a few who (feed raw / have a cat with stomatitis) could give experienced-based suggestion(s)

Oooh, *raises hand* me!  Seriously, though, I've only been feeding raw for a few months and still figuring out how to get Lucy's stomatitis under control.  (We just adopted her in August.)  But I have two other cats with bad teeth and gums and have considered trying chicken wings as well.  (Right now they are eating ground raw which doesn't really clean the teeth but is probably better on the teeth than commercial food.)

I was checking your thread hoping someone would mention where they manage to get just the tip of the wing?  Maybe a meat shop could supply some?  I haven't had to be too resourceful yet because we order our ground meat from Hare Today.

Carolina also has a stomatitis cat (bugsy) whose symptoms have gone away on raw.  I think she feeds something other than ground raw...maybe she will chime in.  Not sure if she has tried wings.

Hi TxCatMom,

Why search just for the wing tip portion? My plan is to to buy a package of chicken wings at the grocery store. Trim off wing tips, wrap individually, and freeze. Use remaining portion of wings to make chicken stock. Lovely for soup, useful for sauces. Or barbecue wings for the human family members.

If Mr Poe (and Domino too, he won't be happy if Mr Poe gets something but he does not) chows down on the wing tips really well I might try them on chicken feet - sold here as chicken "paws" and excellent for including in soup making. Decades ago my father-in-law (now deceased) used to enjoy chicken feet - poach, coat with bread crumbs, fry - and eat as a snack with a mustard sauce.

As an aside - did you know that American chicken feet are exported to China? For true! Ours are bigger than those fron Chinese chickens and apparently it's a popular food over there.

My two chicken-wing addicts eat the whole thing and just leave a little of the biggest bone for larger wings.
