I've had cats all my life, used to breed & show Siames, American Shorthairs & to a lesser extent a few other breeds, used to show HHPs-I especially liked to rescue a cat or adopt one from a shelter especially an older cat and then send copies of its wins to the shelter to hopefully encourage more ppl to adopt older cats,I used to do some cat show judging too. & ever since then pretty much focused my energies where they were needed most, on rescuing cats & adopting the oldest, most unadoptable cat or cat that had been stuck in a shelter the longest to give those cats a chance.
In addition to my cat family, I have a dog, snakes, a bearded dragon,a rose hair tarantula, a chinchilla, a Blue Front Amazon Parrot & a 19 year old cockatiel I have had since he was 6 weeks old. The cats get along with the dog. The cats leave the birds alone. When I used to breed German Shepherds my cats got along with my dogs & when I also had an aviary the cats had total access to the aviary, they left the birds alone but did a good job taking care of mice that tried to invade the aviary.
At present I have a number of cats ranging in age from 1 year to 15 years of age. Everyone is neutered or spayed. There's Buddha, a solid black cat who I adopted from a shelter almost 10 years ago. His name fits him, he loves everybody humans, cats, & dog. He's always the first to welcome & befriend a new cat. There's Velcro a longhair brown mackerel tabby cat who enjoys taking baths & his litter brother Buttons, a shorthair brown classic tabby who follows Buddha around and imitates him much as a young child will follow an older child around and imitate that older child. There's Noon, a sweet somewhat shy longhaired white cat who was dumped at the local pet shop with her six kittens last summer. The kittens quickly found homes, nobody wanted Noon so I took her along with Gabriel another longhaired white cat who was dumped at the local pet shop at the same time. Gabriel is unusual in that he's a blue-eyed white with very intense deep blue eyes & normal hearing in both ears. His tail is more cream than white so he may genetically actually be a cream point which would explain his eye color and normal hearing. There's Splat Cat, a shorthaired torbie & white survivor of brain damage from being hit in the head by a car. Splat Cat absolutely loves to watch TV! There's Skittles, a tortie kitten given to me because she was fecal incontinent, a problem which she luckily outgrew.
My most recent new feline family member is a cat named Lucy Liu who arrived just a few weeks ago. She had been hit by a car & her owner couldn't take care of her and didn't want to have animal control take her and put her down. A friend of mine who works for the owner told the owner she knew of someone who might be willing to take Lucy Liu in & she called me. In our discussion I learned that Lucy Liu was all right except for being unable to walk & the details sounded like a classic case of a broken pelvis. A broken pelvis usually heals in about 6 weeks. When Lucy Liu arrived, sure enough she had a broken pelvis & also has nerve damage in her right rear leg. Her pelvis is now healed & I'm doing physical therapy on her right rear leg. Nerve damage takes a long time to heal & her right rear leg is improving very slowly but steadily.
The cat in my avatar is Uno, who was dumped Memorial Day weekend 2011 at a sanitation plant as a 4 week old kitten along with a littermate and 4 10-wk old kittens. Someone had already put her left eye out & also damaged the right eye of one of the 10 week old kittens & damaged the left eye of another of the 10-week old kittens. I took these 3 kittens because nobody wanted them & named them Uno, Righty & Lefty. Uno is sort of my favorite cat because she's the smallest cat in my cat family, she's also the strongest willed most determined cat in my cat family. She's a black cat with a lean oriental build & loudmouthed vocalization abilities that show she has Siamese blood in her somehwere! She's never known anything except being one-eyed & she's one of the quickest & most coordinated cats in my cat family.
I could tell about more members of my cat family but this is probably getting too long already. One thing's for sure, every cat is an individual with his or her very own unique personality. No two are ever alike!
