Hello all,

I'm fostering an extra-sweet girl (through a shelter). She was super-stressed with all the changes in her life and, as a result, was not eating at all - she lost a lot of weight very quickly. They saw no reason that she was not eating except stress. So I started syringe feeding her, but only needed to do that once before she started eating again on her own. (yay!) She's been getting a mix of Hill's A/D (Critical Care) and Felidae (both canned) for the past couple of days. She's eating like a champ now.

I've only had the good fortune (?) of seeing her poop once (in the litterbox), but it was 100% liquid. Should I be overly concerned? I figure she is at least getting *something* in her system even if a lot of it is exiting again. I also thought maybe her body is adjusting to having food again, and the A/D is particularly rich. I hate to take her in again since going back in = more stress.

If any of you have any experience with this, your advice would be much appreciated! She is currently on my lap purring away.

Has she been dewormed?  It's possibly a parasite, or it could be the food is too rich for her system  I suspect it might be the Felidae, but not sure.  It could also be the stress of the new environment.  (Not helpful am I?) I would suggest giving her some plain boiled & shredded chicken for a day to see if that calms her tummy down.  You can also give a teaspoon or so of plain canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin or pumpkin puree NOT pumpkin pie spice), some plain yogurt, or even half of an acidophilus tablet.  Acidophilus is found in the supplement section of the store.  It's easy to crush and dissolves in water, so you can add a bit of water to the wet food and stir.

Stephanie, you were quite helpful! Since the stress caused her not to eat, I'm sure that stress could be a contributor on the other end as well. I'm not positive on the de-worming, but she did go through whatever medical process at the shelter, so I would guess that she got some kind of assessment if not treatment. Poor baby! I hope she gets a great forever home.

I'm reluctant to totally change her diet for a day without the okay of the shelter I'm fostering from, so I will get her some canned pumpkin tomorrow. I just mixed up about a day's worth of A/D and Felidae, and then after that I will use something else. I thought the high fat content would be good for her to gain some weight back, but I will try something else if that might be upsetting her tummy. How about some Innova, Authority, or Triumph? I use those on my guys and have them readily available, though I do have a great pet food store nearby that I could get most good brands from in a pinch.

I don't always have the benefit of knowing who is making which poop in the litterbox (I have a couple fosters right now) so I'll just stick with trying to make things less runny for her.

I used to have a cat who would have fecal incontinence when stressed.  Learned about stress and how it affects the body the hard way with her.  Do you run Feliway diffusers in your home?  That might help with the stress issue.
