I have just joined and my husband and I have two 6-year old cats who we adopted from a local cat shelter back in October 2012. They are a boy and a girl named Bojangles and Yoda.

I look forward to "meeting" you all!

Hi Mani! Thank you!

We didn't actually pick their names. They were the names the shelter gave them and since they are both 6 already we didn't want to confuse them any more. Bojangles had been there for a year. He kept getting passed over for adoption because he was timid and would hide under the chair when people came around. Apparently the person who had him before didn't have a lot of time for him so he wasn't well socialized. Yoda had been there about 4 months - her owner died and a friend took her in. The friend moved to the UK and couldn't take Yoda and that's how she ended up in the shelter. They shared a room together with another cat. That being said they don't get along that well. Mostly during the day when we are home they are fine. In the mornings before we leave for work and in the evenings when we come home there is a lot of chasing and some hissing. Bojangles is usually the instigator but Yoda (who is way smaller) has learned to do her share. We have been keeping them separated during the times we are not at home to keep an eye on things. We have been using two baby gates stacked on top of each other. One gets the east side of the house and the other the west side. We like to swap them out so that they don't claim either side as being "theirs". However, Yoda prefers the east side so when we put her on the other side she manages to get over the gates and we come home to find them quite happy on the same side! We have left them alone after this happens but then we come home to find Yoda nervous and a little fearful. My husband is actually in the process of painting a screen door we happened to have that has upper and lower panels. We are replacing the screen on the bottom half with the plastic lattice from the baby gates, so we will have a door we can latch closed but they will still be able to have contact through the lattice. We did the whole introduction thing and though things between them are way better than at first, we still feel it best to keep them apart if we aren't at home. I think that because they both came from single cat homes they are finding it more difficult to share. Things get better all the time though and although we don't think they will ever be "cuddle cats" they are at least learning to tolerate each other.

Thanks again for the welcome!

Thank you Nurseangel!  Yes, they are very alike and they do look as if they could be related. Their markings are so similar that even we can't tell which one we are looking at sometimes - that is until they are side-by-side. Bojangles is a large cat and Yoda is very petite. In the dark we can tell by their tails. Bojangles has a thinner and more pointy tail than Yoda. We still get muddled up sometimes though!
