My cat Binky started to get the runs last week. I took him in Dec  19 2012 and was fine yup until last week which was a week after I had gotten him a rabies shot. I feed him friskies Beef, chicken and turkey, he started to put his nose up to the fish all of a sudden, so I quit giving it to him. He is about a year old, he plays and acts normal. He was use to living outside, so I thought the food change may b the cause. A few people told me the rabies shot is most likely since he was with me 3-4 weeks and fine up until after the shot. Just looking for feedback.

I always get mine checked whenever something unusual happens. Rosie had similar problems a couple of months ago then started vomiting, so l rushed her to see her vet.

He gave her an anti sickness shot, and l had to starve her for 24 hours, then give her tuna 2-3 times a day for a few days before l introduced her normal food to her

Aw poor Binky! When you took him for the rabies shot, did they administer any type of dewormer?

And the poor little fella was out for a day or so in this really cold weather just recently, wasn't he? I wonder if he got into something that didn't agree with him... or if his immune system took a little dip after his latest escapade. Most kitties living outside have at least round worm and tapeworm, though giardia isn't uncommon. In adult cats, these usually don't present too much of a problem, though it is something to put on the "to do" list. You can try Drontal to treat round worm and tape worm. Where I live (NW NJ), the round worm seem resistant to the Drontal though, so you may just want the Droncit, which treats only tapeworm.

FYI, to treat tapeworm, it's just a one-time dose. To treat round worm, whatever is used only treats the adults (basically), so it has to be administered two more times, three weeks apart (to give the eggs time to mature). Most vets say just one more time, but if you actually want to get rid of them, it's best to give that third dose. If it's giardia... you can get panacur or metronadizole (metro) from the vet. If he weighs around 10 pounds, he'd just need half a metronadizole pill (flagyl) for 5 to 10 days. The meds themselves shouldn't cost much - it's finding a vet that will sell you the meds without having a fecal test done or seeing the cat that might be the issue. (Obviously it's best to have the fecal done, but the test for giardia has to be sent out so is more expensive - a regular fecal otherwise should only be about $14 - at least that what it is around here. But I know you're on a really tight budget. :hugs: ).

The other thing you can try, as Susan suggested, is just fasting him for 24 hours. He might not be happy about this, but this often provides a needed "system reset." And then for a few days, if you can, feed him boiled (poached) chicken breast (or thigh, whatever's cheaper), mixed 50/50 with white rice. Boil it with no salt or spices of any kind, and keep the water you boiled it in. Add a little to the chicken/rice and warm it up before serving. If he just got into something while he was out, this should work.

Another option is to find a human probiotic you can afford. Just look for an acidophilus supplement (better if acidophilus+bifidus) in capsule form that has live cultures. What you're looking for is one with 10 billion CFU (colony forming units). Human probiotics are better a) because they're cheaper than "pet" probiotics, and b) they're easy to find with live cultures as opposed to "fermentation product," which are dead cultures (and which are what's in most pet probiotics).

The probiotics re-establish the "friendly" gut bacteria - and help crowd out the "bad" stuff that can cause diarrhea. Of course, if it's parasites, the probiotics wouldn't help much (if at all).

Vibes for Binky! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Hi, Binky was living outdoors before I found him on my porch in Dec 2012, and I started giving him the Aldi's store cheap stuff and he ate it right up. Then I started giving him 9-lives fish variety and Friskies beef, chicken and turkey, because he wouldn't eat fish anymore and at one time I left it on the dish until he did eat it. Well he got so hungry he was forced to eat what was there. The same week I went to the vet to get him a rabies shot, now on the way home  he was fine, I ran into grocery store for bread and when I got back to the car and opened the door I got a whiff of the worse smell ever.

He had done every body function in his carrier and I was 3 minutes from my house, it was so bad I almost vomited.

So I  left him in the carrier and put him in the shower to get all liquids out and off of Binky, he definitely needed help on this cleaning.

Well those two time (the 2 day old food and rabies shot) was the only change.

I looked at his stool and don't see anything crawling around etc... He seems to be mentally and physically okay.

Plus this may be good news but he farted on me tonight it has been awhile.

So I guessing he is either getting use to canned food or got a virus from the 2 day food or he is allergic to the seafood. Because he was perfectly fine until those two events. and he will not even touch the fish flavor. I can't afford a vet and he is not vomiting.

The only symptoms I came up with were adjusting to a new food which it said can be 2-4 weeks with the runs.

I think it was the 2 day old canned food for sure. It spoils and will grow bacteria after being left out that long. Please don't feed him old food, it could make him dangerously ill.

Hope he's back to normal soon.

Just wanted to add that it is okay to rotate canned food. This will not cause upset stomach. Dry food is a different story.

:yeah: 2 day old canned food would do it! If you can afford some probiotics, they would help in this type of case, but it should pass on its own now that he's eating fresh food...

But you put the can in the fridge after you opened it?
Yeah I wrapped up the plate with plastic wrap and put it in the beer **** (no food in that little fridge), But I however let it sit out waiting for him to eat it. The Vet said the 2 day food deal, would have cleared up by now. Vet said, after the Rabies shot he became finicky because the serum does something to the nervous system, stomach and other things he named, this is second hand info from my sister his assistant. She takes in many cats/dogs and takes care of ferals. she is a pet fanatic. He said to try pumpkin from a can, puree not pie filling and Binky tore right into the food and love the pumpkin. Then she explained that when dog and cats have upset stomachs, they tend to eat grass to vomit etc...Binky tore into it probably because of upset stomach. I just got this info early last night and so far he hasn't  ran down the litter box, he just went pee a couple times as  usual. I been awake all night because of a migraine and neck problems, I'm going to feed him a can of cat food with 2 teaspoons of pumpkin.  Oh yeah he is sleeping on his back again, he started that again about 4 hours ago. So hopefully everything comes out OK. lol

I was replying to the post that said the food was left on the dish until he ate it and was referred to as the 2 day old food. If it was refridgerated than that's a different story. I just wanted the OP to be sure to not leave food out because it will spoil. From the post it didn't sound like he was aware of that.

I hope Binky is feeling better soon.

A little late sorry, been busy. Binky got neutered and I been noticing big changes. No lol have a few little refrigerators and use one for opened cat food, like if I fed him half a can etc... I just took it into consideration it was a know thing, but then again , your right some people may not know there is a reason things are compressed shut. Learned all the in culinary. All canned food is cooked including fruit, then seal in a can which creates it's own pressure. very few things can be canned fresh, like nuts. I learned from the Pet-Vet[emoji]169[/emoji] (pet/tv) that all cat food is dry, the wet foot was dehydrated and water was just added. Hmm. Binky has been doing his business very healthy now, just needed some fiber. Vet told me he was probably born outside and ran with the pack (not sure if its pack, herd, flock, lol).

and mama got him through the end of last winter which was mild here and the gang sorta went there own direction and he may have hung out with mama still and she either left, got killed or snatched and he came to me for help. we'll never know the truth and he is legally mine now
