LAst night I got a surprise phone call from a guy saying that I had his neighbour's dog! They had seen my advert on the 'lost dogs' website, that I made for Troy when he turned up here 4 months ago. After talking to him for a few minutes, I was sure it was the right dog, so I asked them to come over this morning. I did not sleep much last night.
Anyway, they came to see him and I found that Troy (aka Bobby) belonged to a very elderly man who had got him 5 years ago at 8 weeks of age. He lives in the next hamlet over, only half a mile away. It seems that he had not done very much to find him, so all my efforts at informing police, vets, mayors etc was for nothing. ANd of course, he had not bothered to chip him or even give him an ID tag. They only saw the website last night after someone told them about it. But he was obviously fond of him, and Troy was definitely pleased to see his owner again. So of course, I could not deprive an old man, who lives alone, of his dog, and Troy went back to being Bobby, and has gone home, with his favourite stuffed bone. The strange thing is, that Troy and I often passed very close to his house on our walks, and he never made the slightest sign that it meant anything to him.
The house already seems very quiet and empty, and I shall of course miss him, but at the same time I am glad that they are reunited. His owner was a bit taken aback to find I had neutered, chipped and vaccinated him, but that was all for the best. Maybe now he won't run away again.
