Our nephew Scott and Patti are now divorced. She got a very generous package, alimony, etc., and they are sharing custody of the kids. But we spoke to him yesterday and the latest is that Patti was arrested for a DUI and spent 2 days in jail. He is now going back to court next month to try to amend the custoday arrangement. I think she had the kids with her in the car, but I'm not sure of that. But either way, it's a dangerous and potentially deadly situation. Scott said that the kids (age 7 and 9) actually sat down and talked to him about the fact that their mother drives drunk. That's pretty sad when the children have to see that.

Patti has now dropped me from Facebook. I guess she's upset that we are seeing Scott and his girlfrfiend Danielle. We really like Danielle a lot - she's a sweet girl, has an 11 year old daughter, works in real estate, and has been great with the children. I can see how they react to her and of course kids can't hide their feelings.

The whole situation is just so sad, and I think Patti will never learn. She's always had a drinking (and drug) problem, and while I thought she had straightened her life out, apparently she hasn't.

Oh, I forgot to mention this is her second DUI. Last year she owed $900 in back fines. She wanted to borrow the money from us, but we told her we were on a fixed in come and couldn't do it. I knew we'd never see the money again. Someone told us that if you have 3 DUI's you can lose your license for life. Don't know how true that is, but it makes sense.

I understand that the majority of those "children killed by drunk drivers" you see in statistics were in the car with the drunk driver. That would be a real concern to me.

I live in PA. Years ago, a neighbor of my friend had 2 small girls, and was separated/divorced, and had a DUI without the kids in the car. After her conviction, she was never allowed to drive with her kids in the car.

PA here, too. A man in the Scranton area just got a jail sentence for DUI.....his 15-month-old son was killed in the accident. I don't pity anybody who gets picked up for DUI.

Your nephew is doing the right thing to try to amend the custody arrangement. Other than that there is probably nothing anyone can do.

My ex-in-laws took in a friend of a friend one time who lost her house to give her a place to stay for awhile while she found another. She got into a wreck with my ex-BILs car and ran from the scene. The person she hit caught the license plate and police showed up shortly after she got back. Turns out her license was already suspended, but she never shared that with anyone and no one thought to ask her about that before lending her a car to get to her job. The next day, I found a 40oz bottle of King Cobra (alcohol) in the car under the seat. Ex-FIL had a fit - especially after we found more bottles hidden in the house. He had to get the police to escort her out of the house and brought to a shelter down the street. She had 2 kids, and the oldest finally went to the guidance counselor to tell them that his mom drove them to school drunk most mornings. The person the woman hit tried suing my in-laws for damages, but I think it all fell through.

Hopefully your nephew can get the custody arrangement amended now.
