Hi! My Seffie and Po are in their second week of diarrhea. They're happy and playful, drinking plenty and the vet has mostly ruled out bugs/parasites. They finished a 5-day course of flagyl just in case and are still being given Endosorb with little difference. I've taken up the Purina One Urinary dry that I'd just switched them to, but their poos are still mushy.

I just got some probiotics - Proviable DC - from Amazon and have been sprinkling it on their food, starting last night. I watch them from afar to make sure they each eat their own dose, but I was wondering if I could just give the whole capsule to each cat like a pill...?

I know they're called "sprinkle capsules," so I was just wondering if you're only supposed to sprinkle it on the food or if you can give your cat the whole thing, capsule and all...?

Anybody know?

Also, how long should it be before I see a difference? My poor babies don't seem too affected by the diarrhea, but I know they can feel my barely-hidden stress waves...

I don't know Proviable that way. Maybe call the company's customer service to ask? Post on their FB page? http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/ Post the question on their ask-a-vet forum? http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/index.php/index

FYI, our holistic vet recommended using a human acidophilus supplement, one that has 10 billion CFU. We use this one: The pet probiotics are typically made with fermentation product, which isn't live cultures, and she feels strongly about the difference. These I know can be given in capsule form or sprinkled on the food.

Results with probiotics, if they're going to help (the strain, the dose) can usually be seen within 1 - 3 days.

If the probiotics don't help, I recommend trying DiaGel. We keep this on hand for any incidence of diarrhea that lasts beyond one day, and while there haven't been many, it has never failed us: http://www.revivalanimal.com/DiaGel.html We've never needed to give more than two doses, but it may take 3 or 4. They're given 12 hours apart.

:vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: I surely hope the probiotic and new food help!

I would definitely give the whole capsule to each cat.
According to the ingredients, Proviable contains

Total Bacteria min.

5 billion CFU’s* per capsule
l currently give Ritz one that contains 10 billion, and within two or three days I noticed a difference in Ritz' energy level.  (She is prone to tummy upsets).  I simply open the capsule and sprinkle it on Ritz' food in the morning. I don't know if it is tasteless but she has no hesitation eating it.

Don't know anything about Endosorb though it seems to be prescribed for toxic stuff and horses....

I thought all was good when I woke up to two cat boxes with almost normal poops, but my Po just had an accident on the carpet. I saw her squatting and went to get paper towels and she was having a mushy poop right on the carpet. First one out of the box since this whole diarrhea debacle started. I'm devastated.

I just gave her a dose of Endosorb, like the vet was having me do. I'm also going to keep up the probiotics; hopefully this was just a quick upset.

She seems fine otherwise.
I was so happy this morning.
