Lethargy and not eating or drinking - maybe pancreatitis?

Hi there,

My sweet little kitty Mrs. Brisby is not feeling well. She's normally a very chipper, playful and alert little girl. She's only 2 years old and I adopted her in December 2011. She hasn't had any health problems over the past year and a bit except for occasionally finding small spots of blood in places she tends to sit. I don't know what this means but this hasn't happened in a little while. She's been lethargic since the weekend and won't eat.

Just to preface this whole situation: On Friday night, my mom brought her senior cat to stay the night. She is going on a cruise for 10 days and doesn't want him to stay alone for 10 days so we decided to test him and Mrs. Brisby out to see if they would be ok with each other. They didn't really fight, they only hissed at each other a couple times but for the most part, my mom's cat hid under my bed and they pretty much stayed in different rooms. I had my mom pick up her cat the next morning as I could see Mrs. Brisby was not so happy (she would growl and hiss whenever he came into the room).

Since after my mom's cat left, I noticed Mrs. Brisby becoming very lethargic. She had thrown up some of her dry food. I only found a couple small amounts of vomit on the floor, she wasn't overly sick. It was just her food too, no liquid or anything else. I started to notice that when I picked her up, she would meow a bit (which she wouldn't normally do) so I felt like she was in pain...upon further "inspection", I noticed that she would meow when I felt her stomach. Another thing to consider is that she has very long fur and grooms herself but almost never hacks up any hairballs. My little Fuzzy (who passed away in 2011, she was 18 years old) had long fur too but she was constantly hacking up hairballs. So I'm kind of hoping she has a big furball in her stomach and it's causing constipation, and nothing more. When we saw the vet on monday, all she saw from Mrs. Brisby's bloodwork was that she was dehydrated. Her electrolytes, blood sugar, etc, were all ok. The vet said that nothing "popped up" as alarming. The vet injected some fluids to help hydrate her, gave us some buprenorphine for her pain. We've been giving it to her as directed only in the morning and at night before going to bed. Obviously that caused her to be more sedated so I didn't think about it last night as much. But this morning she is still extremely sluggish...lays down on her side and has no interest in food or water.

Can anyone relate to this?? What was your experience? The vet pointed out that there is a possibility that she could have pancreatitis. We have an appointment for her this evening to see the same doctor. My boyfriend is with her today, unfortunately I have to work and he doesn't have a car so we can't take her any sooner.

Other things to note are that she has urinated since the vet and I can't tell if she pooped or not. There was one tiny little poop in her box this morning but it could have been there since Monday. I cleaned out her litter this morning so that we can see if anything comes up today.

I am extremely worried! I don't want to lose her, she's such a great cat, I don't know what I would do without her! :(

I'm glad you're taking her to the vets, though given the symptons, I wish she were at the vets NOW.  You probably do, too.

As you probably know, not urinating is really bad (really really bad if it were a male cat) and not eating isn't good either (fatty acid disease).

Vibes....

Thanks! I really wish she were too. Unfortunately I already have to make up the hours at work today and the rest of the week for the hours I missed for her emergency appointment on Monday morning. She is urinating, but seems like she hasn't had a bowel movement yet...if so it wasn't much.

Would you suggest having her stay at the vet hospital? The vet had suggested on Monday that she stay in icu there so that they can give her fluids and monitor her closely...I'm afraid of leaving her there, plus it was a little too expensive for me to do that. :(

She hasn't had a BM because she's not been eating.  Nothing in, nothing out.  Most likely, the stress of your mom's kitty being in the house has triggered an upper respiratory infection.  Try warming up some wet food for her and see if she'll eat it.

Could that really happen? My cat Fuzzy had a respiratory infection when she was about 16-17 years old (about a year before I had to put her down). Do cats act this way when they are this stressed? I have been warming wet cat food but she won't even look at it. I put the food in her face and she walks away. I even give her different kinds...she is a very finicky eater!

Thanks! So will she need a surgery if she does indeed have pancreatitis? I just finished reading this thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245013/4-year-old-male-cat-very-lethargic-wont-eat-wont-drink-vomiting and I'm really hoping there aren't any complications and that if she does need surgery, that the outcome would be good. I'm so anxious about her right now. My dad offered to pay some of the vet bill, so I'm not as worried but I'm also anxious to get Mrs. Brisby to the vet tonight. This has to be the longest day I've ever experienced! My boyfriend is home with her right now (he works nights) but he's probably sleeping as he isn't answering my calls or responding to my text messages...I just want to know how she's doing!!

Mina is continuing to improve, thank you. I cannot say if your cat will require surgery - I guess it depends on the severity of the attack and/or infection. No-one knows what causes pancreatitis, but as with many cat illnesses, stress can play a part. Obviously you still don't have a definite diagnosis, and I hope it is something that is easier to treat.

She tested negative for pancreatitis... Next step is to test for irritable bowel disease (or disorder?) Which will take a few days to find out. She's staying at the vet hospital for at least tonight. I'm glad to know that she's being properly cared for but the vet was still unsure and concerned. I'm hoping for the best outcome.
