I posted this info in another very long thread, but thought it deserved its own

so other people on a budget might have a chance to learn about it.

Unless there are small amounts of grains included in some of the by-products, this appears to be grain free.

Similar to Friskies Poultry Platter (but without the Rice and much less carrageenan)

I am speaking of Grreat Choice Poultry Platter

(sold at PetSmart - usually 40 cents per 5.5 oz can - On Sale for 37 cents right now on their website.)
  • Ingredients: Turkey, poultry by-products, sufficient water for processing, meat by-products, animal liver, fish, salt, guar gum, potassium chloride, vitamin E supplement, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, biotin, folic acid, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper proteinate, manganous sulfate, sodium selenite, potassium iodide, choline chloride, carrageenan and taurine
  • Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein (min) 10.0%, Crude Fat (min) 5.0%, Crude Fiber (max) 1.5%, Moisture (max) 78.0%, Ash (max) 3.5%, Taurine (min) 0.05%
Granted, this is not EVO, but a decent food at this price.

I feed it to my Ferals and they enjoy it, and their coats are thick and soft.

I have recently found that my guys LOVE Sheba canned food more than anything else they've ever eaten.  I think Sheba used to be kinda crappy and not complete, but the formulas now seem good. I only use the non-fish flavors, they contain no fish, just fish oil.  They're complete, grain-free, have real meats listed as their first ingredients, and no carageenan.  They do list "meat" by products, which isn't my favorite, but all the other qualities and the price outweigh that for me. I get it for 55 cents/can at Wal-mart or Petsmart. For example, here's the ingredient list for the turkey pate:

Turkey, Turkey Broth, Meat By-Products, Poultry Giblets, Chicken, Poultry By-Products, Natural Flavor, Guar Gum, Added Color, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Minerals (Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate), Fish Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Vitamins (Choline Chloride, Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Vitamin E Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex [Source of Vitamin K Activity]), DL-Methionine, Salt, Taurine.

They also have "premium cuts" that are in gravy, but I only use the pate kind since gravy usually = carbs.

I bought some of the Grreat Choice canned foods the other day- two cases (48 cans) cost me just under $20!
Both cats seem to enjoy it, and the ingredients seem to be good for such a low price.  The sale is going on for a few more days- I believe it ends on Feb 2 or something.

I looked at these when I was at Petsmart a couple of days ago, but if I remember right they were only in the 3 oz cans, not the 5.5.  That's still quite inexpensive (compared to many foods!), but twice the price when you compare the sizes.  I wish that more of the inexpensive grain-free foods were more readily available in larger sizes- that certainly helps cut the price as well.

It is possible that I was blind when walking through the store, but that is the only size that petsmart's website reflects as well :(

I'm really impressed with this food for quality and price. I'm goint to Petsmart to try it now. On sale for .37 for 5.5 oz can ! I like to rotate foods because I like different things about their ingredients. Haven't found the perfect one yet, lol. What I like about this one is that it has no grains, friuts or veggies and of course the price!

Know what's annoying about Grreat Choice? The smaller cans cost less per ounce than the larger cans, so I have to open too many! :tongue2:

I didn't look for the small cans. How much do they usually cost? For me (2 cats) that would be better because I wouldn't have to refridgerate leftovers. At my Petsmart the regular price of 5.5 oz cans is .40 cents.

I meant the 5.5-oz cans ARE the smaller cans :D. I usually buy 13-oz cans when I can because usually it's cheaper that way (and I don't have to open so many) but, oddly, Grreat Choice is cheaper per ounce in the 5.5-oz size.

They do have a Fancy Feast equivalent in 3-oz cans but it costs more. I think 55 cents per can.

I just fed it tonight and my cat made puke-y noises for the first time in his life. Hmm... not sure I'll feed it again. Sounds like it doesn't agree with him.

I just bought a whole bunch of that Grreat Choice.  It's grain free and really inexpensive.  Ingredients look great to me.  I bought the 5.5 oz cans, although I think I will buy the larger cans next time.  It actually is less expensive for me, but the pricing seems to be different in Canada.  It's 50 cents for the 5.5 oz can and 99 cents for the 13 oz can.

Thanks - I also posted in a separate thread that I found Stop & Shop supermarket store brand "Companion" to be equivalent to Grreat Choice (I read the ingredient panel; looks like it's from the same supplier) and it's even cheaper - $0.69 for tall 13-oz and the 5.5 oz run as little as $0.33 when on sale, Stop & Shop stores are in the Northeast: http://www.stopandshop.com/our_stores/locator/store_search.htm

Stop & Shop "Companion" = PetSmart "Grreat Choice" but even cheaper

If Stop & Shop's store brand is the same food as PetSmart's, then probably other regional supermarket chains' store brands are too - I would check labels as there may be other bargains lurking out there.

Wow, I love a bargain, but I am starting to wonder just how bad these ingredients actually are.

At 69 cents for a 13 oz can, these must contain the worst of the worst in terms of the quality of the meat.

I wish we could know for sure exactly what each manufacturer is actually using.

Then again, if the company doesn't have advertising expenses, or add the "fancy" stuff like veggies and food coloring, maybe it really is the same quality as the brands with all that :dk:. But, yeah, I wish there was a better way to know for sure.

That is a VERY good point Willowy - hopefully that is the case.
