Hello all, I'm new here but not new to cats. I've always preferred dogs but always seemed to have both dogs and cats as pets. My reason for joining the site is named, Nya. She's a domestic short-hair, primarily white, gray, & yellow in color. She wandered onto my farm about 4 yrs ago, I fed her (we southern mamas tend to feed everything!), she stayed. She was primarily an outside cat, living in my 5 acre "yard" with my other cat, Cinder. (Cinder's nickname is catzilla, she is huge...not fat, just huge-lol) They were always brought inside during bad weather (too hot/too cold). Life seemed OK for them.

Then came 2012. I went thru a very difficult time financially, like a lot of people. Let's just say I lost 50 lbs because I didn't have $ to buy food. I know the secret to weight loss! It's FREE, you don't have to eat nasty dehydrated or freeze dried food...just don't eat at all! LOL I can laugh about it now b/c I was able to sell some things & to buy myself a reprieve. Keep your fingers crossed fellow cat lovers, I may have a job soon. I've been told I'll be called back for a 2nd interview!! Yay, more funds for cat food...& cat toys & vet bills...(sigh)

Anyway, Oct. 2012 I found Nya lying in a depression beside my driveway acting very strangely. I knew she was hurt but she had no external injuries I could see. I brought her in, confined her to a small kennel...& waited. It was all I could do. My nearest neighbors who live @ least  1/4 mi. away had been leaving pet food on my porch so the cats & my dog had not gone hungry but I live about 16 mi from the nearest town & in Oct. I had no $ for gas much less a vet. My credit is ruined b/c I couldn't even pay my utilities & yes, I lived for about 6 mos. w/o power, or water, or anything else considered necessary for modern life...I still lived. We all did but I plan to discuss the whole concept of suffering with God when I meet Him/Her. LOL

Nya healed, slowly. I fed her mashed up vienna sausages thru a syringe; gave her water that way, too for a week or so. I kept her clean. After about 2 wks, she was sick of that carrier & since she is a very vocal cat, she made me sick of her being there, too! At 1st she couldn't walk. I'd bring her out & put her on a blanket in a patch of sun coming thru the front window. Gradually, she got stronger.

Even after she could walk again, I noticed she was acting strangely--being startled by things that shouldn't have startled her; hissing @ Cinder, walking in a strange but deliberate pattern around the greatroom. I didn't put her outside anymore; that "little voice" told me not to & I've learned not to ignore it.

This past Wed. that little voice started screaming at me to get the cat to the vet. She wasn't acting markedly different but I didn't care for the way she seemed to be seeking out small places to hide. We went. Vet said x-rays showed multiple pelvic fractures (healed) most probably caused by being hit by a car tho I can't for the life of me figure out how she got onto the road from the enclosed yard! Vet said, as I suspected, Nya is blind, most probably caused by head trauma from car injury & that she had a large, large intestine hernia which was probably what was causing her pain on Wed. She offered us (my son who lives w/ me & I) the option of medicating her for pain & sending her home or surgery. Again, the little voice, who was by now not only screaming but also poking me in the gut, told me I'd regret it if we didn't spring for surgery. >$300 of grocery money but what the heck, eating is a crutch, right? Surgery it was.

Brought her home yest. She's doing pretty well but the vet sent home Medcam for pain. Packaging says in bold letters not to give to cats. I call the vet, they insist it's ok, at least the tech on the phone said it was OK. Nya is sleeping now, in a patch of sunshine coming in thru the front window. I'm checking on her every half hour or so but I don't want to wake her. Sleep is restorative.

I feel really bad about not being able to get her help b4 now. I'm still crying thinking about her suffering & my inability to lessen it. I seem to be learning lots of lessons about life just lately but I don't want any animal to suffer so that I might grow as a person. I am struggling to understand...lots of things just now.

I do have a question, anybody else want to weigh in on the Medcam issue? Anybody know any research literature about it I can read? Any articles about helping blind cats anywhere on the site or any experts on the issue who might give me tips on caring for her?

Sorry 'bout the long post. I hope to be a source of help to others here, not just a taker but right now I just have to be a little selfish for Nya. Blessings to all,
