Phosphorous in egg yolk lecithin?

I use egg yolk lecithin for hairball control for my cats.

I was just reading about egg yolks this morning, and read that egg yolks are a "good source of phosphorous".

Would this mean that the egg yolk lecithin might have too much phosphorous in it, for a cat? Or does the process of extracting the lecithin, eliminate the phosphorous? Or is the amount so tiny as to not matter?

Always something new to worry about. The more you know, the more you worry. Ugh.

Well, one large egg yolk has 66mg of phosphorus, and 22mg of calcium. When feeding egg yolks, I don't adjust the amount of calcium I give the cats, and there hasn't been any issue. As you know, I've had my diets analyzed, and even with egg yolk lecithin (1/2 cap daily) and egg yolks (one or two per cat per week), it isn't enough to throw the Ca:p ratio off based on the amount of calcium I use (without adjusting the amount for phosphorus in egg yolks or lecithin).

The amount of phosphorus in the diet I feed the cats is 1.19% phoshporus on a dry matter basis, but I alternate between eggshell and MCHA (freeze dried bone) as sources of caclium. Bone has a lot of phosphorus in it. In working with someone looking to make a homemade diet for a CRF kitty, we analyzed the diet without the MCHA, using just eggshell as the source of calcium, and the diet was 0.8% phosphorus on a dry matter basis. (Which is perfect, because on a CRF diet, the target is a phosphorus amount less than 1% on a DMB basis). :)

So not enough additional phosphorus to worry about, especially as you use primarily eggshell as the source of calcium.

:lol3: I'm just really anal AND a blab. :anon:
Not "just" Laurie. You are wonderfully generous of your time and knowledge. You use your abilities to help and improve the lives of countless numbers of people and their cats. Myself and my cats included. I hope I'm not embarrassing you. But really. It's true. I am so grateful to you, I could never express it to my own satisfaction. I know you know how appreciative I am, and others are, probably you just want to brush it off, it's just something you do, the ability to research, it's just who you are, the willingness to share information. Okay, be modest if you must. But if you are going to be amazing, you have to accept the admiration and gratitude and kudos that comes with it, you have to let us tell you how much you and your selfless giving of effort and time means to us. It's only fair. :D

Yes, I blush. :emba: :blush2:

And thanks to all for thanking me. :hugs: Whether I do the research to help with someone's questions, or for my own questions, it's all learning and helps all of our kitties. :heart2: :rub:

(But I DO tend to be a bit anal about information and opinions vs facts. :emba: And I AM a blab. :lol3: )

Sorry to bring up this old topic but I've got a related question.
My cat had a hairball problem a little while ago and I started giving him egg yolk lecithin, it's working great, but as he sheds heavily this season, I give him one capsule a day for more than a month, and I haven't seen him cough since then.
But he's not on complete raw or homemade diet, I've just transitioned him to canned food and now he's trying freeze dried raw, which is just one meal out of three. My cat refused to eat any fresh raw meat other than chicken so he gets about 35 grams a day, that contains quite a lot of phosphorus but little calcium, and with the egg yolk lecithin, should I worry about this phosphorus ratio problem now and give him calcium? (I calculated the amount to compensate the the lecithin capsule and chicken meat is about 50-60mg a day)

So you are only feeding either canned food or freeze dried raw (100% nutritionally complete freeze dried raw)? If that is the case, which is what I gather from what you wrote, then I don't understand where the chicken is coming into play :headscratch: (I confuse easily though  ) I can tell you, I have fed my cats up to 1 1/2 capsules of the egg yolk lecithin per day and not seen any issues. I even did this with my kidney cat and didn't appear to have any issues. At the time, she was eating both raw and canned.

Now, if you are truly feeding raw, perhaps this question would be better served over in our raw forum, where those experts could answer it for you.

Thank you for the answer! I won't worry so much then.

My cat is now eating canned food and 100% nutritionally complete freeze dried raw (2-3 meals of canned, 1 meal of freeze dried raw), but he gets some chicken because I'm slowly transitioning him to try if raw diet would work, my cat is super stubborn and it already took me a long time to transition him from kibble to canned.
