Hi all.... I'm new to this and have to remember to post it late in the day as otherwise most of you would get two Friday ones

Today's question is:

Do you have any family heirlooms? If so, what is your oldest and/or favourite one?

That's actually two questions...  or three.....

My favourite heirloom belonged to my beloved grandmother.. it's a Royal Doulton Famous Ships cup, plate and saucer..  not all that old, but very precious to me.

You can probably post this 5-6 hours earlier if you need to and still be OK. :)

I have a few things. When my father was in the Navy he bought two small vases for his mother when he was in France. When she died they passed down to him. They were always on the bookcase in our house when I was growing up. When my father died my mother gave them to me.

My mother has also given me a fair bit of her mother's depression glass. :).

I have a watch that my grandfather gave my grandmother on their first wedding anniversary. I love it :)

Quite a few, actually. The oldest stuff is19th century jewelry, including some rings and necklaces that belonged to my great-grandmother and a stick pin from a great-great(-great?) uncle who served as a Union surgeon in the Civil War. My favorites are newer - my grandmother's diamond engagement and wedding rings.

I have my grandmother's (really my great-grandmother....long story) china; she had two patterns and I have both sets; they're packed away, which is really a shame because they're so beautiful, but with the cats in the house, I'm not taking any chances. I also have her rolling pin (my the yeast doughs and cookie doughs that pin has rolled out!) and all of her old cookie cutters as well as many of her old spice containers. She braided rugs, using old wool coats, dresses, and such, and I have a couple of the braided rugs. I think I'm probably the only one in the family who still has a braided rug that's in good condition.

Her old hutch stands in our kitchen. My mother had it after Grandma down-sized her house and then when Mom and Dad downsized, it came to me. I love that hutch. It has scratches on it and marks, but it's still beautiful to me. And her bureau is in our bedroom.

I have  my parents wedding picture.  I had it redone back in the 70's and have had it hanging on the wall ever since.  The picture was falling apart and I had it done to save it.  It came out quite beautiful, the frame I bought for it looks antique so it  makes the picture even more beautiful.  My Mom was only 18 and my Dad was 28 when they wed.  I will always cherish this photo of them.

I have a family bible brought over from England (before 1840). It has all the names and birthdates of my ggg grandparents and their children. Also from the same family is a civil war era bayonet, and a photo of my gg grandfather's family. In the back row is my great grandmother, the only image I have of her. She died before my Dad was born.

There are a ton of the in my family. Furniture, crystal, china, paintings, door knobs (yep) and even a couple of cars, personal diaries, letters, photos etc. My fave are all of the old diaries and photos. Nothing else compares.

My grandaddy was a justice of the peace. I have an old lard can with a lot of his papers, some of them personal. There are old chattel mortgages tied together with tobacco twine where he borrowed money to plant the crops every year. They are stamped paid. On some of the papers I found signatures of three of my four great grandparents. There are also records where he was the administrator of his father's estate. There are checks to him and each of his siblings where the estate was divided. They each got land and $122. and some change. That was in 1924. I also have the love letters he and my grandmother wrote to each other before they married. They are mostly about walking to and from church. In one letter my grandmother tells him she is too young to marry him. So she waited until she was 14. They are precious to me.

Now that you mentioned the lard can, I have two of them. My grandma used one to store sugar and the other for flour. I still have the scoop from the flour can.

When Mom passed, I got the pictures and what memories they bring back. So many old pictures of aunts and uncles and cousins. So many holiday dinners, both at home and at my aunts' tables. There were a lot of Christmas trees in our lives!
I guess pictures aren't really heirlooms, but they have memories to treasure.

Love that you still have your grandparents' love letters!
