I had to call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control center tonight. On Jennie this time. The cats had just had their supper. I had just got out the Vet's-Best to give Jennie a sprinkle, because she hadn't quite licked up all her calcium powder (I suspect she leaves it on purpose because she knows she will get a sprinkle of V-B)

I keep a few tablets at a time in a small shallow container, because the jar they come in is difficult for me to get the tablets out. Suddenly I heard the unmistakable and discouraging sound of Mazy regurgitating, downstairs. Forgetting everything else, I rushed downstairs to make sure Mazy cat was okay. She had made a spectacular mess. She apparently was in the litter box to pee and had hit the wall with her vomit, the wall behind the litter box platforms, so of course it dripped down behind everything. I had to dismantle everything and pull it all apart, to clean it up. It was a pretty big job.

By the time I'd finished I was so tired and discouraged I just wanted to cry. I came back upstairs and checked on Mazy, then came into the kitchen to clean up cat dishes. There I found the little container I keep a few Vet's-Best tablets in, on the floor and licked clean. The good news is I knew who ate them. Queen Eva had been downstairs supervising my clean up operation. Mazy was up in her Safe Spot. Jennie is the opportunist, when it comes to ingestibles. I knew there were three whole tablets and probably another tablet's worth of dust in the container. I grabbed the bottle (thank goodness I use a container, otherwise she would have eaten the whole bottle!) and read “in case of accidental overdose contact a medical provider” so of course I called the ASPCA Poison Control Center hotline which is taped right here on the wall at all times.

They have the product in their database and the vet on staff said that because all the ingredients are safe for cats Jennie will be okay. She might have some digestive upset, such as vomiting, she might have some loose stool, but there is no danger. I was so relieved and overwrought I burst into tears right there on the phone. What a night.

Everyone should have this number by the phone:

ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

1-888-426-4435

There is a $65 charge for the call. It's worth every penny.

Thank you so much for sharing this Otto. You are right it is a number everyone should have on hand! This story is an excellent reminder that preparing in advance is critical because when an emergency arises it's so easy to lose your head and not know what to do or who to call.

Awesome job being so on it and calling right away. I'm so glad that Jennie is going to be okay!

Now, take a deep breathe and take a few minutes taking care of yourself! I'm sure your adrenaline was pumping like crazy. You did good!

You're welcome, and thank you for your kind words. I was so freaking out internally, but in retrospect I guess I can pat myself on the back for not giving in to panic.

Having the number posted right here really helped. Not just because I didn't have to go searching for it, losing what could have been (in another scenario) precious minutes.

Seeing it right there in front of me helped calm me, because it reminded me of what to do, you know? Instead of giving in to panic, I knew I had a recourse.

So yeah, EVERYONE with pets should have that number displayed. You just never know.

What a crazy night that sounds like! Bleh... Well, you got through it with flying colors! So sorry you had to go through all of that but yet another puss cat experience to write in the journal eh? :D Thanks for the poison control number. You are right, everyone should have it handy in case of emergencies such as the one you just described.

Jennie has had a normal, albeit smellier than usual, poop. I swear that cat has the digestion of a goat. :lol3:
