Last night I notice the kitten was missing. Looked everywhere, finally found a window open in a front room that she must have wriggled through. She's been out the front before but never left the front fence.

No sign of her in the front yard and I'm starting to panic. Then I hear a *YEOWwRRrrrr* coming from down the street, I shine my torch and see two sets of eyes light up. One is the kitten and the other is a massive feral tom. He's attacking her and trying to position himself (biting at her neck) - I had to run and yell but the tom didn't move, ended up kicking him off her and he scratched up my leg pretty bad.

Recovered Mouser (kitten) and carried her home, she was glad to be inside and was obviously pretty shaken up. I checked for any injuries but couldn't see any.

Her age is around 3-5 months....is it possible she could have been impregnated at such a young age? I hate to think of her having kittens, then trying to home the kittens (and likely failing)

Thanks for any help.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Yes, it is possible. I'm so sorry she got out. :(

The best thing to do, IMO, is make the spay appointment now, so you won't have to worry about more unwanted kittens - or her getting pregnant again. Given she's so young, it's really best for her health if she not have to go through pregnancy and birth, she's just too young. :(

Most say that a cat can't have kittens until around 6 months, so it seems unlikely, but I guess it's still possible.

I agree that it's a good idea to make the spay appointment now anyway!

Soon as they come into heat they can get pregnant, the youngest one of mine started calling was 14 weeks. So it is quite possible, many cats begin calling before 6 months old which is why many vets do paediatric neutering.

It's theorised they needn't be in heat to get pregnant with cats being induced ovulators  when in heat they're more receptive to the males otherwise they'll fight them off.

As already said, make a spay appointment asap.

Yeah, but a experienced, dominant, territorial tom does what he pleases.  Beats them up if necessary and does it.

So this fighting off dont works on all.

On the other end of the scale, there are real true love stories. But this is another question.   :)

Thanks for the responses.

Unfortunately the kitten isn't mine, it's my housemates who doesn't believe in spaying (or treating for fleas, immunizing etc.

I'm someone who always tries to respect others opinions but in this case I'm finding it very hard.

Seriously considering sneaking mouser off to the vet next time housemate is away for a few days. Are there any visible signs after the operation? Shaved fur? drug after effects?

Worst part was housemate didn't seem to care about the tom cat trying to mate with his kitten. Even tried to tell me I'm wrong for caring (and basically made fun of me!) I just had to role my eyes and laugh or else I would have punched him in the face.

Sounds like an excellent idea!   :)

Ask the vet not to shave too visibly, a little uneven perhaps.

As the housemate is a non caring person, the chance is big shehe will not even notice, or not care.

If shehe notices, you can either play unknowing "I suppose she fastened somewhere and tore the fur off".

Or tell she got a wound in a cat fight, so you had to take her to a vet...  Here is the payment copy, you owe me 50 dollars, thanks!

<snip>
Your housemate needs reducating.  How horrible to live with an outdoor cat or kitten that's not treated for fleas - and how upset will she be if the kitten gets something it could have been immunized against and is seriously ill, or which spaying would have prevented (pyometra) or greatly reduced the risk of (breast cancer).  And if the kitten needs a c-secion can she afford it?

All mentioned as possible ammo to try to help make the housemate face up to what owning a pet means.

However i agree with sneak her off to the vets asap.

I think based on how your roomie acts, he or she seems to have a strange way of showing love and care for the kitty.. I would say that if you can, sneak the kitten off to the vet to have the basics taken care of, at the very least? The roommate probably won't even notice I bet.
