Hello, I took in a kitten about two weeks ago that was rejected by his mother. All seemed fine until today, he began making a sort of... grunting noise. That's all I can call it, because i'm not sure what it is. He won't really eat his food and he seems lazier than normal.

His eyes opened 2 days ago, but have closed back up due to greenish eye boogies.

Please help me I don't want this kitten to pass away and I'm not sure what to do!

Visit your vet PDQ.  Antibiotics may help both his grunt, his eyes and his general wellbeing, but unfortunately hand-raising kittens is hard however skilled you are.  Whatever, do not feed milk if he's cold and don't feed him unless he's on his tummy with his head up, like a kitten would be with it's mother.

Unforutnately mother cats are very good at knowing if a kitten has something wrong and will often reject it well before we can tell.

Good luck.  Hopefully you can see them today - this really is an emergency.  If your vet cannot fit you in, ring round.

he is lethargic right now, he wont eat and his mouth only opens slightly when he meows.. and when i look at his mouth during a meow, there is a drool film like substance on the sides of his mouth.

Sorry but the only advice I can offer is vets, ASAP.  I have no idea what you are describing but he sounds very ill, and tiny kittens like this go downhill very fast.

I took him to the animal hospital emergency room. They said his stomach was bloated and they believed it was something.. i forget the name but they said it was fatal almost 100% of the time, and any testing would put him in more pain before he ultimately passed. We chose to have him put to sleep after he began bleeding from his mouth.. thank you for your help.

I'm so sorry
.  As Oriental Slave said, his momma probably knew something was wrong, and thus rejected him.  No matter what you did for him, he probably would not have lived.

Yes. So it was, he was apparently doomed from beginning.

Although it doesnt means it is meaningsless to try and fight on.  Not so seldom, these rejected kittens do survive with good human help.   And if they dont survive, they had at least some time in comfort and love, instead of just be rejected and self die in some cold corner.

is surely painful for you EvaLyster, but it was truly a win - win, considering the situation.

You man be sure his immortal soul is now resting in peace.

God bless you.

I am sorry you lost the little kitten. I am going to lock this thread now. You might want to visit our Crossing The Bridge Forum and post a tribute there.
