My cat Fangs has some behavior problems regarding food. She is very picky about it. She seems to almost only enjoy wet cat food chunks in gravy. I used to give her the cheaper 9 lives brand, but she prefers Fancy Feast now. However she often eventually refuses to eat a certain flavor of Fancy Feast and keeps meowing most likely to signal she wants something else. Yet I refuse most the time, because she is not my boss.

Also she meows something awful when she wants food. Another bad habit is that she is self centered and will try to wake me when I am sleeping if she is hungry. She is pretty smart and has figured out the cellphone alarm wakes me up, so she jumps up and tries to knock my cellphone to the floor with her paws often. Almost every morning I have to battle with her and I am getting aggravated with her about this and her meowing. This keeps escalating more and more with time and I want to train her instead of allowing her to continue training me!

Do you think cats have a right to refuse food or be this picky?
How can I get her to mitigate her harassing meows when she is hungry?
Is there a way to get her to stop waking me just because she decided she wants to eat while I am asleep?

Look, cats will always be the boss in the house if it depends on them. They will always be 'self-centred' (as you put it). It's just in their nature. What I've found works for our household is compromise. (More from my side though, hahaha!) I usually get up around half past 4 anyway so it's not much of a bother during the week. But weekends is a different story. I usually get up and feed her as soon as she wakes me and then go back to sleep. That way she's happy and I get my extra hour or so rest. It's not perfect, but it works for us. :)

As for the pickiness... I don't have that problem, and thank goodness for that! I know how frustrating that can be. Does your cat have specific flavours she prefers? Rather stick to those flavours then. Wet food is in any case healthier than kibble, so it's a good thing she prefers wet.

My mom's cat used to be such a picky eater, sometines he preferred the gravy and other times the jelly, and other times the casserole wet food. It was always such a gamble to feed him. She just made sure she had his favourites at hand at all times. I don't think there's much else you can do.

I hope you come right! Good luck to you! :)
