If you cat has Bowels problem I was reading  in a book that if you mix 1/2 a teaspoon of Vaseline with food to lubricate the digestive system to get bowels smoothly again. But I would never feed my cats vaseline.

And you can give a cat or dog Gatorade to help the bowels too.

The book is called  Joey Green's Amazing Pet Cures

I wouldn't either.

Vaseline is petroleum jelly, which is a common ingredient in feline hairball remedies (it usually says 'petrolatum' but it's the same thing). I know some people use straight vaseline rather than laxatone or other hairball gel, but I wouldn't, and my vet advises against it too. Because Vaseline isn't meant for ingestion, it doens't have to pass the same regulations as a product that IS meant for ingestion.

However, if one uses either product, vaseline,(petroleum jelly) or a hairball remedy made for cats, it should be given on an empty stomach at least two hours before any food (or medications) as the petroleum product interferes with nutrient absorption.

Pumpkin is was better and safer, and healthier, to help a cat with occasional constipation. One tablespoon of pumpkin a day, split between two or three meals.

Of course sometimes all that is needed is a diet change, from dry to wet. :)

Apparently the guy who invented Vaseline took a tablespoonful every morning . Well, I suppose you could give your pet Vaseline but there are better, healthier remedies. Petrolatum can reduce the absorption of some nutrients, too, so it's not something that should be done often.

Gatorade can be given for dehydration but I don't see why it would help the bowels. And Pedialyte would be better; Gatorade has far more sugar and all that food coloring.

Anybody can write a book ;). Doesn't mean there's anything good in it.

You're instincts are correct, dejolane. When your cat is sick, take him or her to the vet. :) As Willowy said, anyone can write a book. Doesn't mean what's in it is good or true or safe.

I want to ask what do give a cat for the runs?  Thunder had this problem once before then it cleared up by itself.
