Hello,

I am new here as we just got a new cat!!

Last wednesday we adopted a 2 year old cat from a shelter. He was dropped off at the shelter by his previous owner who simply decided she no longer wanted a cat so he was not abused or underfed or anything. when we adopted him the lady at the shelter stressed to us that he would not eat when we took him home as part of his adjustment period. When they got him to the shelter he went for a couple days without eating because of the tough transition, eventually he began eating and in 2 months gained 7 lbs. Since he has been home he has adjusted well, he is freely walking around and rubbing his face on the corners of walls and sleeping and he cuddles with us and isnt afraid of our dog. he is perfectly adjusted except he hasn't eaten anything yet. When the lady at the shelter told us he wouldnt be eating we assumed she also meant he would be hiding and afraid and generally scared but he isnt. We have tried different types of food, both wet and dry. Last night we crushed up some of the food and put the juice from a can of tuna on it and he ate that but he hasnt since. We get a feeling that he has an issue with chewing, like he cant chew. he just seems completel uninterested in eating but he walks around to his food dish and meows at us like "its time to feed me" but when we do he just smells it and walks away. When he first came home he was having coughing attacks and that turned into gagging, now he seems to be clearing his throat alot. He has no issues with drinking, he is drinking out of his water and the dogs water. He has used the litter box to pee ALOT! but he has yet to poop, which makes sense seeing as hes not eating but its still worrisome.

Just wondering if anyone has anything that could help us. we just want him to start eating something. anything!

I would get him in for a vet checkup. . .a lot of shelters can't do a full checkup for financial reasons, and newly adopted pets should always have a checkup regardless of the previous situation. He may have something wrong with his teeth, and the cough should be addressed.

Do you have the same food the shelter was feeding him?

yes, the shelter gave us samples of the food he was on. he has no interest in it at all. going to the vet for a check up seems like my next option. I guess we were just being naive when the shelter said they had him checked out when he got his shots. I can see how they would just give the cats a clean bill of health and send them on their way, there are sooo many that need homes!

I would not try to guess at this one. You are a good doobie for adopting this furbaby. I would get them to the vet as soon as you can. It could be many things and maybe it's just stress but at least you'll know after the vet visit. A dental, or other physical problem may very well exist that the shelter did not catch. The do have their hands full at those places. Please keep us updated on what you find out!

He could have something as simple as something caught in his throat or mouth.  Your mention of him "clearing his throat" and/or gagging makes me think that's possible, too.

Is he using the litter box at all?

One thing to try is to get a can of wet food and put it on a saucer.  Smush it up and add water until it is very liquidy.  Give that to him, and if he eats it, it's a pretty good sign of mouth problems.  We have used that method with some old, toothless cats, with good success.

However, we thought our Punkin was going to starve before he started eating when we first adopted him.  You wouldn't believe it now!  He wouldn't eat soft food, he wouldn't eat dry food, he wouldn't eat treats, nothing.  We finally got him to eat Purina Kitten Chow.  I'm guessing the high fat content finally got his attention.

Good luck with your new guy.  Keep in mind that not eating for just a few days can damage a cat's liver and kidneys, so don't put off a vet visit for too long.
