Scooter is my first female cat she's 7months old  and she's my angel she got spayed 1/10/13 I've managed to take off until next 1/20/13 so I can be here to take care of her and so that my older cat doesn't get to a bullying habit which he tends to do with even my dogs!! lol I called and asked if I could have her stitches removed 1/18/13 which is a Friday because 10 days from the time she got the spaying falls on a saturday they are closed on saturday and sunday I go back the following monday at 6 am to 7pm and that goes til the following saturday which there again they aren't open is there a way she can just chew them out or I can remove them I don't want my babygirl to suffer for 4 weeks til I can get a weekday off cause that means she has to wear that e collar.. Please any suggestions

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought, "First spay?  How could a cat be spayed more than once?"  lol... silly me.

I'm surprised they didn't give dissolving stitches.  I find them more convenient.  However, I was told by my vet once that you can remove the stitches yourself if you feel comfortable doing so.  You can just cut each stitch and pull it out.  That's what they do at the vet anyway.  I have removed stitches from pets before and I've also removed my own stitches and stitches from a child.  No biggie.

You can always call and ask your vet.  Unless there's something different about these stitches, I'm sure it's fine.  I've used nail clippers to cut the stitches or blunt-ended scissors.

Yep, I remove spay stitches all the time, unless I want the vet to take a look at how it's healing (free checkup!). But of course this requires the cat's cooperation! :tongue2:. And usually another person to help keep the kitty still while you snip the sutures..

You can't leave them for 4 weeks, they can end up embedded. I remove my kittens stitches myself, it's easy if there is only one knot that you can cut and the stitch will slide out.

Since it's your first female cat you might want to get the vets to do it, you can go to another clinic that has more suitable hours and get them removed.

You can also remove the e-collar, I don't use them at all and never have any issues.

Doesn't your vet do evening surgeries?  Most UK vets do now, makes taking a pet back at the right time so much easier.

I think this problem can be easily avoided if your vet ends up using dissolving stiches. It is actually very common practice and is the kind we use at my school. I know my two girls got them when I got them spayed. Just ask the vet when you drop them off what kind they are using and if they carry the dissolving kind. Awesome alternative!

If they don’t carry them, taking them out yourself is quite simple. You will more than likely need a friend to help you hold the cat, and you take fingernail clippers, snip it, and like said before, they will slide right out! With no harm done to the cat.
