I'm fostering a cat rescued by an animal rescue from a vet hoarding situation. He's been eating raw which is what I feed my cats. Their stools are perfect raw food stools, solid, every 1-2 days and not smelly.

This cat has been on raw (chicken) for nearly two weeks and we are still having poopy issues (He was on whatever dry kibble they were giving him at the rescue and his poop was even worse).  He rubs it all over my carpet which is really frustrating cos I have to scrub it every day -_- He's at my house because he has an upper respiratory infection but any research I've done doesn't list diarrhea as a symptom. the rescue already took him to the vet and that's the only thing they found wrong with him. I've tried plain yogurt and also organic plain puree pumpkin on suggestions but no results.

I asked the animal rescue volunteer who supervises and she said it could just be that he's still really jacked up from all the meds that they "messed him up with" at the vets. Doesn't really add up to me, any other suggestion I can try?

He goes once a day or sometimes once every two days, sometimes its just loose and occassionaly its really runny. The smell has gotten less terrible though. Maybe its taking him this long to adjust to raw? When I switched my cats to raw their stool was fixed the day of.

If I cant find a solution I'm going to tell the supervisor to take the cat to the vet again or trying handling it herself. I'm still irritated at them that they didn't tell me about this and also that when they gave him to me he was FILLED with fleas that they didn't mention. I got rid of all of them before he passed them on to my kitties luckily.

Other than that he's been a very happy, playful and social cat thanks to the comfort zone pheromones that turned him into a completely new cat!

Has he been checked for worms or other internal parasites? I think that would do it.

If he had fleas then he has tapeworms. Only drontal or Profender will kill tapeworm.

Kittens under stress often fall victim to Coccydia. What colour is his poop? If it is yellow, green or a cement colour with foul odor than it's probably Coccydia. Sulfa is an amazing drug for this, only one dose a day for 5 days.

I would not let him near your cats but keep him isolated in a room of his own. Fleas, worms, and upper are easily transmitted.

Never introduce a foster to your own cats until you have isolated them for one to two weeks. Even then, you risk passing things on. I know this from experience. :)

Is he growing well? Is he energetic or lethargic?

Being new to raw, he may be having a little trouble digesting it, if he indeed has a clean bill of health.  Did you give him any digestive enzymes along with the raw?  When I started my furbabies on raw I gave them a digestive enzyme, as well as probiotics (still do, as a matter of fact).  I know you said you are giving him yogurt, but have you tried a powdered probiotic, which is probably a lot "stronger" than just plain yogurt?  I give mine the same probiotic that I take, and the same quantity...one per day.

So at least you are seeing some improvement.  Oh, just a thought.  He's on an antibiotic, right?  For the URI?  That might cause some diarrhea problems, couldn't it?  Also, if he IS, and you decide to give him probiotics, be sure to NOT give them at the same time.  Spread them out throughout the day.  Antibiotics in the am, probiotics in the pm...something like that.

Regular colour poop- brown, not on medicine anymore vet said only 10 days, cat was kept separated from my cats, energetic and playful like I mentioned before.

His poops only been getting better as I also mentioned (less runny, less smelly) so I think it is just a matter of adjusting to the food, I'll look into trying some digestive enzymes, thanks!

Problem with asking "advice" on forums people will always assume your cat has some rare deadly disease and say go to vet. Anyway a day after posting this his poops were completely solid and went to tootsie roll. He's at the adoption center again since this weekend because his foster time with me is up. They're feeding him kibble and his poop is back to mush after just two days.I feel so sorry for him I wish I could feed him something better but unfortunately all the cats get fed the same food some kind of purina kibble and they all constantly have diarrhea here.

So why did you bother posting if you didn't want the benefit of other people's experiences? And I don't see where anyone said your cat might have some rare deadly disease.

I'm glad he's doing well and is up for adoption. :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

I actually did benefit from the last poster who gave me really great rational anecdotal information about how she transitioned her kittens to raw. Nobody mentioned anything terrifying in this case but I've read forums where people freak poor owners out. Where they start "diagnosing" cats they've never seen before. It's like when people start self diagnosing on web md. Which even I am guilty of! But I wouldn't tell someone else that they have a disease etc. When I post in forums I am looking for "simplest explanation" or most likely. In this case food transition was the case. And also nobody read my post properly where I mentioned that other than being loose his stool was normal. I.e. not green, yellow, no blood etc. otherwise I would have told the shelter to take him immediately, poop shouldn't be that color. And I believe that people should read more carefully and rather just not answer if they are talking about a different situation. That's simply all I was implying, I probably should have explained it better!

What are you talking about? You didn't give the poop colour until it was asked and then nobody gave any advice after that except LDG... :dk:
