Hello everyone,

In my attempt to introduce better and better foods to my kitties diet (with the exception of raw, which I'm not able to provide and keeping in mind that there is no "perfect" commercial food out there), I'm asking my fellow The Cat Site members for their invaluable opinions on some foods. I'm currently feeding my six-month-old and my two 8-year-old seniors Wellness (Kitten, Grain-Free Chicken/Turkey, Core Chicken and Turkey, Pure Indulgence Chicken and Turkey), Evo Cat and Kitten, Blue Wilderness (Kitten, Chicken, Turkey), Weruva (chicken-only varieties), and Merricks (including BG Chicken...but avoiding it now). I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with feeding Wyson Epigen 90 Dry (for grazing) and and Fromm Family (Adult and Kitten Gold for grazing, Grain-free Duck and Chicken Pate...does contain ocean fish as 4th ingredient which I'm weary of). Thank you in advance for your advice and opinions. I haven't purchased these foods yet. They are just on my mind at the moment...

The wet foods seem good, but wondering why you feel you need to put out food for 'grazing'.

Also, though I'm far from an expert (I fed raw), I was under the impression that 'kitten' food is kind of a marketing ploy; at the age of six months, your kitten can certainly eat all life stage foods.

I feed and really like all the Wellness but I skip the Pure Indulgence. I think they have more thickeners.

I also feed mine Evo ,Blue and Merricks and I really like them all. I like Weruva because of the real meat and good hydration but it is high in carbs so they only get it once in a while.

I'm not a fan of dry but Epigen 90 looks like the best dry you can get. Very expensive though.

I haven't checked into Fromm for a while but I think it's good quality food.

I like your Avatar kitty

As far as kibble goes, I think Epigen 90 is the very best out there.  For the canned foods listed, my own cats would not touch any listed with the exception of Weruva, but only like one or two of them, and only fish flavors.  But, like Ritz, I feed raw, mainly.  I DO keep a bag of Epigen 90 on hand for dire emergencies, and Weruva for when I'm in an extreme rush

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeding food with fish in it once in awhile.  (most of us who feed raw actually feed them whole sardines once or twice a week!)

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I will take each one to heart. I'm not able to feed a raw diet due to my life circumstance, but want the best for my kitties. I will certainly look into the Wysong. The reason I keep some dry down for "grazing" is that my six-month-old (older) kitten is hungry frequently and has a great appetite. (She's fine...recently had her first wellness blood panel that came out all normal.) I'm hoping to eventually get her off all dry foods. As it is now, she maybe gets 5% dry? As little as possible. My other kids are kibble addicts unfortunately and at age 8 I'm having a very hard time getting them to eat wet. (They eat some but not enough.) It's a struggle! I'm trying to do the best I can with a tricky situation. If anyone has suggestions for other healthy canned commercial foods out there, I'm all ears!!!

Best,

jlc20m

P.S. I wanted to mention I mix in the Pure Indulgence with pate to make it more soupier. Bella, my bottomless-pit kitten, loves gravy. Also, I agree that she can eat "all life stages" foods that is why I give her the Wellness Core.

My
, is as follows: I feed dry Evo, the Chicken and Turkey formula to my domestic and hybrid exotic cats. I also feed, whole live prey, twice a day. The reason, I feed dry food is, I have a VERY hectic schedule. So. I need to make sure, that, the cats have food at all times. Now, the reasons for the Evo is: A) it is the only thing, all my cats can digest well and B) it isn't extremely expensive and C) is fairly healthy for dry food. Now, the reason for the whole live prey, is, it is very economical (I breed, all my own: mice, rats, rabbits, quail, and 7 day old chicks) and of course very healthy for all my cats.

I think everything on your list is great really

Wow, thank you!

P.S. About the whole prey, if I dare bring a mouse into the house, my elderly mother (who I care for) will leave it lol...

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I'm not a big fan of Blue Buffalo, but I just looked up the Blue Wilderness foods for cats, and was pleasantly surprised. :)

If I were feeding canned now, I'd probably have in rotation:

Nature's Variety Instinct (I just picked out the peas and carrots before serving) http://www.naturesvariety.com/Instinct/cat/can/chicken

By Nature 95% chicken, turkey and maybe beef http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/productpages/95percentcannedcat.php#ccl

Earthborn Holistic Chicken Catcciatori: http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/cat_formulas/chicken_catcciatori/ingredients.php

Ziwipeak http://www.ziwipeak.com/moist-cat-food-ziwipeak-daily-cat-moist-cuisine/ (Oooo, they've introduced one with rabbit!)

Oh ETA - I happen to agree. If the Epigen 90 turns out to be too expensive to feed, I'd consider the EVO chicken & turkey.

Quick question - any reason not to consider some of the freeze dried raw foods? :dk: Nature's Variety and Stella & Chewy's make freeze dried raw food that is sterile - it's pasteurized. It's meant for rehydration, but it can either be left out dry as nibbles, or included in rotation. Here's info on the sterile part: http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/10/22/sterile-raw-pet-food.aspx

I think your list looks very good.

The Blue Wilderness cans are good, but a little pricey for me.

My Kitties didn't like Evo Cat & Kitten, but Love the EVO 95% Turkey & Chicken

I'll go ahead and add my :2cts: My cats are all on Nutro products and have done very well on them. They get both Nutro Max Cat and Nutro Natural Choice. That said, I buy several other premium brands to give them different flavors and textures which seems to make them happy. Your list looks good to me. I too like to leave them kibble to graze on and I measure it and put it in timers between the main meals of wet. Nutro Natural Choice will be introducing grain free wet hopefully in the next few weeks. You might want to take a look see at the label when it comes out and give it a try.
