Chester, our oldest of two new cats, has been with us for about two and a half weeks now. On his first visit to the vet, they applied Revolution and commented that he had a pretty "fierce" case of ear mites. This was about two weeks ago. He goes back in two more weeks to have a second dose applied.

For the last two days, he is really displaying symptoms of discomfort. Itching, rubbing, rolling around on his ears, shaking his head, and holding his ears at funny angles. Earlier when I was petting him, he shook his head and a "chunk" of black "gunk" came out of his right ear (about the size of two popcorn kernels).

I don't like the idea of him suffering for two weeks needlessly. Is this maybe just the Revolution doing its job? I am considering using a home remedy as well, just to provide him with some relief.

Can anyone comment on how effective Revolution has been for your cats concerning ear mites?

If he was my cat I'd be making an appointment to take him back to the vets - he is in a lot of discomfort.

l second OS's thoughts.

When l got one of my kitties, he had terrible ear mites. They treated him with Revolution but also cleaned out his ears with a solution. l also had to take him back two more times to have the solution cleaning, he kept getting the Yoda look. Those ear mites are tenacious!

I have found that a severe infection does require two rounds of Revolution but the vets I have consulted with always recommend a second dose after 2 weeks.

You can also help by drowning them in olive oil. Put about a tsp of olive oil in ear canal and massage it in. Your cat will shake his head but leave it in for a few hours.

You can use q tips to clean the outer part of the ear being careful not to go to deep.
