So we moved to our house 2 years ago and there has always been this stray ginger cat hanging around. Our neighbours told us it was stray for around 2 years prior. About a year ago, I started feeding him as every time I cooked he would sneak in. I then gradually let him stay in with me but my husband made me kick him out at night. Finally my husband said I could have him! So he has lived with us a few months and I adore him and he adores me. Recently he started limping, yesterday I took him to the vets and they found a micro chip :( they called the company and he hadn't been reported missing but the vet contacted the owner and he wanted him back so. I had to leave him there. I am heartbroken and sobbed all the way home cos I'd grown so attached. What I'm asking is what are the chances that he will find his way back to me? Do you think if she loved it here she will?

The owner said he'd been missing 3 years... Yet he didn't care enough to report missing.

If the old owner lets her go outside, and they live somewhat nearby, the chances are quite big he will come back to you.

My advice for you is you do contact the old owner and propose you do buy the cat.  IF he agrees, hopefully they will demand just a symbolic payment "because you are worth it".  It wouldnt be fair for them to fish money from you just because you become attached.

Lets not guess, try and contact them.   :)

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

She was pretty much an outside cat so im hoping he lets her out. The vet wouldn't tell me the address but did say its a main road in my area.the houses behind mine back onto a main road so I'm hoping.....

I have no way of contacting the owner :( I would definitely pay.

You can perhaps ask the vet who knows the adresse to send forward a letter from you.

Prepare a letter with a stamp, so it will be easy for the vet to write down the adress when he is alone, and post it.  Or letter without stamp, if the vet prefers it.  Ask, if the vet seems agreeable to such procedure.

I imagine such procedurre should be OK with the vets codex of honour.   And or let the old owner know in other way. perhaps by phone, you would like to contact them.

It the old owner is any wise, he WONT let her outside, not for a good awhile at least...

BTW, Her coming back to you wouldnt help anything, you will be in the same spot again.  The only difference may be it will be a little easier for you to bargain for her "look, she herself wants very much back to me, please!"

I may try that.

If the cat came back, I'd go back to how things were. Unless th owner somehow contacted me or I needed to revisit the vets then there would be no problem.
