My 13 year old Bengal has a UTI and was prescribed Zeniquin by the vet. I usually give it to her every morning at 9, and did so this morning.

But then I accidentally gave her a second dose a few minutes ago when I gave my one other cat her own meds. I feel awful and really want to know if anyone knows if there could be any problems with this or not. It's been 12 hours since her first dose, but still in all. I would call a vet, but there are none open that I know of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Mmai!

Would you post:

1. the strength of the tablets (25mg, 50mg, 100mg etc)

2. the dosing directions (from the label)

3. her weight

4. the type of infection she's being treated for

4. name(s) of any other drugs she's currently taking

While giving double doses is a concern, it happens sometimes to all of us :alright:
It is not as dangerous as one would think when antibiotics are concerned.... It can take quite a bit to overdose on antibiotics.

Here, from the Zeniquin Safety Information:
Cats

Marbofloxacin was administered for 42 consecutive days to 24 cats approximately eight months old (eight cats per treatment group) at the dosages of 5.5, 16.5 and 27.5 mg/kg/day. These dosages represent 2, 6, and 10 times the recommended dosage of 2.75 mg/kg/day. Treatment with marbofloxacin did not produce adverse effects on body weights, food consumption, ophthalmology, serum chemistry, urinalysis or organ weight parameters.
IMHO that second opinion that second pill won't make a difference.... Maybe some tummy upset, as antibiotics are generally harsh on their digestive systems.... Aside from that, I wouldn't worry. But that's me. If you are worried, call your vet, he/she would be able to help you :wavey:

I called our vet and was told it shouldn't cause any problems, just to keep an eye on her for any. So far everything's good and she's acting normal with no apparent side effects. I still feel horrible for giving it to her anyhow. The confusion of having more than one cat on meds at the same time.

She was prescribed 1/2 a tablet of Zeniquin (25mg) every 24 hours for a urinary tract infection. She's 7.2 lbs and isn't currently taking any other medications.

It's always reassuring to rely on the advice of a competent Veterinarian!

From Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook 7th edition:
Overdosage/Acute Toxicity

It is unlikely that an acute overdose of marbofloxacin would result in signs more serious than either anorexia or vomiting....

Doses:

Cats:

For susceptible infections (urinary tract...) 2.75 - 5.5 mg/kg once daily...Give for 2-3 days beyond cessation of clinical signs...and for at least 10 days (urinary tract). If no improvement after 5 days, reevaluate diagnosis
So, you're dosing at 12.5 mg daily is at the lower end of the approved range as, based on her weight, she could receive up to 18 mg. You'll note the recommendations to continue for a few days beyond the end of symptoms and for a minimum of 10 days, too.

Well, although this was why you came here...I'm sure we'd all be happy to see you stay around!
