I saw this plush leather couch i would love to have for my living room but not sure if its ideal to have since my cat an all. I currently have like a swade/polyster/leather couch, the swade/polyster are the seats, and the leather is on the bottom and back on the couch, she doesnt scratch my couch, the only problem is that when she jumps her claws sometimes gets to deep in them, but that only happens when i dont get her claws cutt on time, and im actually shocked she doesnt scratch my furniture, but im just asking yall for advice if this is a good thing to get, if not what other material i can get

We have leather couches and haven't had any trouble with Jamie sharpening his claws on them. There are a couple of small scratches across the backs of them from him running across them when he was little, but putting throw blankets across the backs has prevented more damage. We've had other cats in the house who've also left the leather sofas alone.

Microfiber couches are forgiving if her claws poke through when she jumps up. They look and feel nice too.

My cats seem to like to claw ANY material. I have found though, they LOVE those 'cardboard scratch pads' you can buy at any pet department and leave my furniture alone. I have three scattered around my house and they run to scratch on them. Now I just have to tell them 'no', and point to the scratch pad, they run right over there. It's like they 'forget' once in a while, (like getting on the counters too) or more likely they are hoping I forgot and they can get away with it. I recommend those corrugated pads to everyone getting a new cat, it sure saves yours furniture.

I second that. Our cats leave our microfiber sofa alone. In fact, it took them quite a while before they'd even go on it at all.
Our leather chairs have been scratched up over the years, not so much from deliberate clawing, but just from them jumping up and down and running across them.

I have a leather sofa and seriously my 3 year old son has done more damage to it than the 5 cats. Before my son we had a faux suede sofa ugh it was a cat hair magnet.

I agree with having scratching posts around, no matter what kind of sofa you get. If you decide on leather, spend the extra to get REAL leather. Bonded or bi-cast leathers are more plastic than anything, and any scratches and wear from daily use will show up as a contrasting color from underneath the surface - and it looks bad.

Punctures on real leather are self-healing, and you don't see the scratches and wear, in fact the leather just becomes softer and more beautiful with time. Don't get a super-fine leather like buckskin, though, many of the highest quality leathers are very thin and can tear more readily (and they are more expensive). Regular thick cow-leather furniture will last through decades of cats.

The only problem I have found with microfiber is to make sure you get a medium or lighter color. We purchased two dark brown ones, and with our three cats had to vacuum them several times a week. This actually 'pulled' little white fibers out of the material and made them STILL look that they were full of hair. Our lighter colored ones in the family room never looked like this. The little fibers were almost impossible to get off, tape, rollers, even battery 'de-fuzzers' never did get them off. We ended up giving them to our daughter after spending a lot of time hand pulling the fibers.Beware!

Very interesting info on leather furniture, thanks!

I bought a new couch 2 years ago, velvet. A rich velvety brown color. It's lovely and the cats have shown no interest in scratching at it. Of course they aren't in the habit of scratching the furniture anyway, but I had one pseudo-friend tell me I was an idiot to buy a velvet couch with cats in the house. They do love rolling on it though, but it does not hold cat hair. So glad I didn't listen :lol3:

It took me a long time to find that couch, since everything seems to be microfiber these days. That microfiber stuff makes my skin crawl. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. And, since I used to clean a few houses who had that kind of furniture I can tell you that removing pet hair from microfiber furniture is a major operation.

l concur with the microsuede/microfibre. Mine show no interest in the sofa and loveseat l have in the living room.

l also have a sofa and recliner in the family room that they have never clawed either. They are soft velvety-feeling, but aren't actual velvet. The couch reclines at both ends, in theory anyway. l've necer used it, or the recliner, as l'm scared to trap a cat in there
These do hold hair, l have to brush them fairly often.

If she doesn't scratch the furniture then you are very lucky and can probably have whatever you like.

You're very lucky. Blighty scratches the cardboard scratchers with delight. Also the scratchy sissel things but nothing thrills him more than scratching the backs of my furniture. I'm too scared to look at the backs to see the damage. Little bugger.

I highly recommend microfiber!

Because of the structure of the material (very dense) it really shows no evidence of 'cat damage'.  I had a microfiber recliner for several years when I brought the Boys home as 8 week old kittens. After a year, the only damage they did to it was... get this... the little buggers found it entertaining to chew the tip of the wooden handle you pull to raise the foot rest! Why? I have no idea, but they loved it! They didn't scratch on it a lot, but they did have their moments with it, but it never showed one mark!

Having the recliner prompted me to purchased a $1500 microfiber (duel-recliner) couch a few months ago and I absolutely LOVE it! Both cats walk, lay, run and pounce on it daily. Neither cat has ever scratched the arms, sides or cushions, but  Keeker has a slight habit of sneaking behind the couch and scratching, but all I have to do is say, "What are you doing back there?" and he saunters out and goes straight to his cardboard scratch pad to finish up his manicure. I've checked the couch several times and it still looks brand new and I am confident the couch will last for years to come.

As far as cleaning it/keeping cat hair off of it, all I ever do is wipe it down with a damp microfiber cloth and the hair comes right off - VERY easily! When I first got the couch I kept it covered with a quilted bedspread; that is, until I looked over one night and saw a 'lump' and discovered Keeker found a new hidey-place! LOL  He loves crawling under the cover and hiding in his private little sanctuary on the couch. I rarely, if ever, see any cat hair on it, but that could partially be due to the color? It is called Sultry Pecan, which is a greyish-tan.

I have a beige microfiber couch, too. Mingo has scratched the corner a few times, but I can't see any damage. He used to lie on it a lot, but there weren't any hairs left, and he sheds hair EVERYWHERE.

The holes are like the tip of a pin, the color is beige. One of my 3 cats in the 13,5 years that we live together destroyed 4 couches. 2 fabric and 2 faux leather. She also destroyed countless curtains etc. So you think those microfiber are going to last ?
