Hello!  My wife and I are first time cat owners.  We adopted a six month micro-panther (OK, he's really just a black DSH) from the local Home for Wayward Cats.  He is very well behaved, loving, and we love him but we have some concerns.

Absinthe and his litter mates were abandoned when the owners of his mother sold their house.  They took their cat with them and left the kittens to fend for themselves.  The new home owner took the kittens to the local shelter.  When we visited the shelter we met him (his sister was in a foster home at the time) and he was so affectionate.  He won us over.  (My wife prefers black cats, and after learning that they are the least likely to be adopted I then wanted to get one.)  He was already de-sexed and has some of his vaccinations.

We took Absinthe to the vet on the way home where he got the rest of his vaccinations, a health check, and some drops in his ears for wax.  He weighed in at 5lbs exactly.

Over the following two - three days he was scared and preferred to hide in his carrier, and when he became more bold, under our piano.  He did eat his food, drink water, and use his litter box (his stool was solid).  However, he would itch his ears quite a bit to the point of falling over.   He refuses to jump.  Instead, he crawls or climbs up to where he wants to be.  If it is too high for him he will do this meer cat like pose indicating he wants to be picked up.  We made little steps for him to get into our bed, as he sleeps with us every night.  He also has trouble on our floors (hardwood, tile) when it comes to running.  He also struggles with going down the stairs (also hard wood) and doesn't care to play.  He loves affection and purrs like a diesel tractor.

After two weeks, and one particularly bad afternoon where he skipped dinner and got prickly when we picked him up, we took him back to the vet.  The vet said his itching is likely dry skin.  (We did take his collar off to see if that would help.  He is also fascinated with our air vents.)  Our vet said his ears looked healthy and he couldn't find any fleas.  He suggested adding some fish or olive oil to his food.  We do feed him wet food, BFF brand, changing up the flavour every day and leaving him just under 1/4 cup of Orijen dried food since my wife and I work long hours.

Our vet weighed him again and he gained 4 oz over the two weeks.  The vet said the cat's eyes don't seem as bright as they should be, but when the vet produced some cotton balls to toss around to check Absinthe's vision, he perked up and attacked the cotton balls.  We then had to take them away before he ate them!  The vet also took his temperature, which was 102.3 degrees.  As a precaution the vet gave us a round of antibiotics.  The vet also feels the mother cat could have had a virus that affected his motor skills, or that the cat is either a late bloomer or even just weird.  The vet doesn't think it is FIP but won't rule it out 100%.

It has been three days since he started his round of antibiotics and we have noticed a difference.  He's more curious, more interested in play, brighter eyed, and even though he was always a clean cat he seems more concerned about his appearance (but nothing unusual for a cat).  He will be rechecked by the vet tomorrow or soon there after.

My wife and I have been thinking of going back and adopting his sister, but we're worried.  He is the centre of our attention and has the run of the house.  We worry that his sister might dominate him, make him feel less loved, or she might feel less loved.  But, he is an indoor cat and we fear he might be a bit lonely.  Suggestions?

two cats are always better than one, especially when they're so young! They can keep each other company and play with each other when you're not around.

That's great you are letting the vet check him out.. sounds like he's growing stronger every day!

Welcome to TCS!!

Well, I just spoke to the shelter and Absinthe's sister was already adopted.  However, they have another spayed female cat who is the same age as him, was admitted into the shelter at the same time as him, and shared the "kitten" room with him and his sister.  I am going to visit her today to see if I can gauge her personality.  I am just so worried our non-jumping, super suck of a kitty might feel pushed around by a new cat.  I hope they will be best friends.

Hi, welcome to TCS!   I wish Absinthe the best.  Speck is a non-jumper and it worried me at first, but it is just the norm for him.  It hasn't hurt his being the boss of the house.  I hope this turns out to be the case for Absinthe, as well.

Thanks for the warm welcome, all!

Last night Absinthe had a bad night.  He was fine in the morning, but in the evening he became very lethargic, didn't eat very much of his dinner, and just slept curled up in my arms.  (I don't know how I managed to fall asleep in such a position.)  Then, to our happy surprise, he woke us up at 4:00 AM, bright eyed, chipper, and HUNGRY!   I got a laser pointer and he enjoys that, playing longer than he does with his other toys, and even made several jumps in an attempt to get the red dot when it was pointed at the wall.  He is still on anti-biotics and he vet said sometimes there are bumps in the road to recovery.

Also, this morning, I picked up Trivia from the shelter and took her to the vet.  She is a seven month old spayed female black DSH.  According to the vet she is in good health.  She got her boosters, rabies vaccination, and a de-worming since her last one was nearly a month ago.  She also has a mild case of gingivitis, but the vet is sure it will improve with her new diet.  She also has dandruff.  He said it was a normal amount for a black cat, but Absinthe has little to no dandruff.  He also feels her new diet will improve her coat.  I know Absinthe's coat improved dramatically once we got him off the Frisky's and IAMs used by the shelter and onto premium food.

She is a very charismatic cat, full of energy and charming.  We have her in her own room and we have been dividing our time between the two playing with them.  Over the next couple of days we will introduce them slowly.  They were together for a couple months at the shelter but they have not seen each other in nearly three weeks.

Welcome to TCS! :wavey:

I have an "only cat" due to my allergies and I think while she was younger she would have liked to have a friend. I'm glad Absinthe is going to have one.

Good luck with the introductions. :cross: If you have any problems, check out our Behavior forum. You'll find lots of good advice there. :)

Well after a couple days, Absinthe was OK with a door between the two and she was eager to get out and explore so we arranged a face-to-face, faster than anticipated.  She chirps at him and follows him around like a puppy.  When she gets too close he hisses a little then follows her around.  After a couple of hours he's content to ignore her but she likes to sniff him when he sleeps.  I still have her safe room set up and keep her there when they eat and when we aren't there to supervise.

I remember Absinthe spent a few days hiding in his safety room and was standoffish, but she was cool with the house and us right off the bat.  Also, all the toys that Absinthe is disinterested in, she puts to use.  Absinthe will only play with laser pointers, feather wands, and occasionally his little feathered peacock.  She plays with any and everything!

A major advantage of multiple cats, IMO.  My family and I adopted our first cat (a shy 6 month old) then 6 weeks later went back and adopted another 6 month old (from the same vet...they run a small rescue there.)  So our first two were also from the same rescue but not related.  We've added two more since and love having multiple cats....so much fun.

It sounds like your introductions are going well.  I hope they both have a long happy life with you.

Well I am not sure how introductions are going.  A good example is just now.  I had Absinthe laying on me and Trivia joins him, eager to get her own share of pets.  Absinthe then starts grooming her, but after a couple minutes she feints a bite towards him and he taps her face with his paw (claws retracted), then she buggers off and he follows.   I have included two pictures, one of Absinthe watching Trivia play and the other is a close up of Trivia after she finished killing one of the stuffed mice for a billionth time.  She runs around with it in her mouth, I tried to capture that but when ever I go near her she drops it.

Just to put your mind at ease, this sounds very normal.  Grooming between the two boys cats turns in to wrestling on a regular basis at our house.  One of my boys grooms my Lucy until he just can't resist mounting her and biting her neck (they are spayed and neutered) at which point she gives him a good slap and hiss.  But she rubs heads with him, plays with him, loves him, and accepts his grooming on a regular basis, so no damage is done to the relationship.  Sounds like she got tired of being groomed or just wanted to play chase.  :)

That second photo is drop dead beautiful!  Love a sleek black kitty with golden eyes (looks like my Eko, the one who likes to get fresh with Lucy.)

The vet diagnosed Absinthe with FIP (dry) today.  His lethargy remained, his appetite was waning, his fever came back, but also his neurological symptoms worsened.  His balance is still bad and now he gets little shakes.  The vet gave us fever medication to give him some comfort.  We have only had him a month or so but we have fallen so in love with him.  Trivia was with him at the shelter for sometime so likely she was exposed already but remains healthy.  It's just so heart breaking.  He's such a sweet kitten.  We think about how we're glad we got him out of the shelter and to be able to give him a home, if even for a short time, but it's still so sad.

I'm so, so sorry.  I'm certainly no expert, but the little bit of reading I've done suggests that while Trivia may have been exposed to the virus that causes it, that does not mean she will develop it.  I'm so sorry for you and Absinthe though.  I'm glad you are able to focus on the loving home you have given him....for however long.

I'm just reading your thread for the first time, was so enjoying hearing about Absinthe and Trivia getting along so well, and my heart just dropped at your last post. Gosh I'm so sorry to see it.

I don't want to offer false hope, and after doing some quick reading, Absinthe's symptoms do sound like it, I was reading about the neurological symtoms....still there is no way to positively test or diagnose a living cat with FIP.

I know you will take excellent care of him and love him so much as he struggles with this awful disease. But maybe keep just a tiny spark of hope alive, that this is something else. Just in case. You know?

Anyway, I agree that it's quite likely that Trivia will not be affected, she sounds very healthy and strong. And I know Absinthe will have a lovely happy life, for however long it is.

My wife had Absinthe put to rest today, after she came home and found him stuck under a desk, unable to get out.  He also had a couple bathroom accidents.  Unfortunately, I couldn't be there to also say goodbye.  It was a hard decision.

Afterward she bought Trivia all new toys and litter pans and cleaned the entire house, just as a precaution.  Trivia seems to know something is wrong and spent the afternoon attached to my wife, giving her head bumps and love in between bouts of toy mouse killing.  Trivia is doing wonders for us emotionally.  She is trying so hard to cheer us up.

While my wife was at the vet, spending some time with Absinthe before the procedure, she overheard a woman in the other examination room talking about her new leather sofa, how she wanted to have all three of her cats declawed to protect the sofa, and how outrageously expensive it is to declaw three cats.
