I am a new member.  I have always loved cats.  My previous love was Sabrina, an 18 year old Siamese mix, whom I had to say goodbye to 3 years ago.  Broke my heart, and I vowed to not have another cat.   Last December a new love found me, my cat Hobo.   He was a 4 month old stray we found in the back of our shop, hungry and alone, and just as friendly as can be.   I took him in to just feed him and then take him to the shelter to be adopted, but after spending a weekend with us, Hobo was home.   Our lab, Amy, adopted him immediately and mothered him.  They have a lot of fun playing with each other, and Amy is very gentle with him.  As you can see from the pics, he is quite a handsome young man, full of energy, loving, curious, and I am so glad I decided to keep him.

I do have one question.  I have been told he could either be a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest cat.   I don't plan on breeding him or showing him, but I would like to know what type of cat he is.   Any help?

Hi, welcome to TCS!  I don't know what breed he is, but he sure is pretty.  Bless you for giving Hobo a good home.

My, he's a handsome boy! My favorite kind!

Most cats are no breed, called domestic shorthairs (or longhairs, depending), or moggies as a familiar name :). Maine Coons are descended from the large shaggy Northern cats, so a lot of moggies look like them. Norwegian Forest Cats are fairly rare (except in Norway :tongue2:), so that's very unlikely. I'd say he's definitely the kind of cat Maine Coons were developed from.

You CAN show moggies, in the Household Pet class, if you wanted to :D. If he has a good temperment he would probably do well.

Agree with Willowy.

Both on his quite some look alike Maine Coon,  (not Norvegian FC)

and you can show him in the pet class, yes.  He is gorgious!

In Sweden, on a show I followed once the Pet class more closely.  Quite a few of them were somewhat look alike  Norvegians...   But it was Sweden. I suppose in US the Maine Coon look alikes are more common.

Good you took this guy in, he was clearly in need of help.

Although there is some chance / risk, he had already a home, but did come astray.

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

You mean "except in Europe". For example they're one of the most popular breeds in my country and I'm not in Norway.;)
Again someone with actual experience having to correct a post made by a non-breeder

And don't forget, not everyone knows where Finland is ;)

Thanks for all of your input.   When I had originally found Hobo, I held onto him for those first four days to see if anyone would claim him, but no one came around to look for him.  We live out in the country, so if anyone is missing an animal, they will come around to ask about them.  I know for certain he must have been around for a few days, because we had left our garage door open one night, and there were very small putty prints on our car which must have been his.   I am glad we took him in, because that year we had a very cold December, and because he was young, malnourished, and with the cold and wild animals around our place (foxes and coyotes), he would not have made it.   When I first took him to the vet when we decided to keep him, he had scabs on the back of his neck where it looked like an animal had clawed him, so wherever he was, he wasn't treated right or was a runt of the litter and picked on.  Hobo is now a full grown, happy, healthy 1 year old, and we love him a bunch!   Even my husband, who isn't a cat person, adores him, and Hobo adores my husband!
