I started being a feral caretaker by feeding 2 females that had already been spayed by my neighbor. There is a male cat that they don't get along with.  Then another female feral showed up and I recently had her spayed.  The thing causing me a lot of stress with these ferals is the fact that they do not get along with each other.  I wish I could let them all in my garage to get out of the weather but the original 2 females hide from the other female and male.  She will hiss and growl at them also.  So I let the 2 original ferals stay in the garage and make the others stay out, although I hate doing that.

Does anyone else feel the stress with their ferals that do not get along with each other?

I don't interfere in (or stress about) their relationships :lol3:. I just make sure that if one is chasing the others away from the food, that I put more out after he's left so they can eat. Other than that, they can deal with it, as long as nobody is getting hurt.

Is the male neutered yet? That could make a big difference.

I try not to stress out about it. I've got 11 in the colony, 8 are here frequently, and I have two rather aggressive males. I had a VERY happy colony of cats until Baloo showed up, and he scattered everyone which way and that. :sigh: I just set up more feeding stations, some quite some distance away from where I was normally feeding them to ensure everyone can eat.

They work it out. The trick is just to make sure they're all sterilized. Then you avoid the serious fights. They can SOUND horrible - but I've seen them, and it's usually just one of the two really noisy girls howling as if they're dying, and Baloo's just looking like he's going to chase after them. :lol3:

Exactly....the girls sound as if it's a terrible life-threatening fight!!  And I think the sound is amplified in the garage.

The female feral that was just spayed will also chase the other females to the storm sewer and they will hide down there for awhile.  My neighbors cat is an inside/outside cat and he comes over and chases all the cats off.  SOOO much cat drama here!

I don't know why I worry about them so much with their drama and I try so hard to keep them separated.  I guess I'm not use to it yet although I have been feeding them for over a year.

I finally uploaded pictures of all my cats to the site recently.  You'll have to check them out sometime.  Funny thing is I had my 2 inside cats that I adopted from the shelter first.  Then I started feeding all the ferals.  They all look related in the pictures because I only have 2 different fur pattern schemes going on with them.

Honestly, you don't really ever get used to it. I've been caring for ferals for over 10 years now. The group in this colony, for four.

...like I said... I try not to worry. :lol3:
