I think the cat I had been feeding for 6 months or so was already someone's pet....lost maybe or dumped.  My neighbor and I trapped the cat.  It is a black cat but when I took it to the vet it had already been altered.  The vet clipped his ear I guess in case we decided to trap and release.  He sits on my lap....but is very angry when I want to get up....growling and scratching.  He does not like it when I move around.  He stayed upstairs in the house for the first month...only came down when I went to bed.  Now he moved into the office on the first floor he stays in there....sometimes he will come out and wants to sit on my lap.  He gets in my face...drools and kneads my chest.   He gets frightened easily and growls....I am trying very hard to be patient but cannot figure out how to get him off my lap without upsetting him.  He is not a small cat and can be very intimidating.  When I tried to pick him up he bit me....I expected that but not the aggressive behavior when I want to get up....ok he only needs the litter box twice a day I need it a little more.  How do I handle this problem????  I really need some help from people who understand these cats.  I do not want to give up.

i can't say that i have ever had the same problem but what about keeping some treats with you when he is sitting on your lap. this way when you need to get up you could lead him off of you by offering him a treat over to your side.

I am sitting in a recliner chair he likes that because then I have a big lap....if I try to sit in a regular chair he growls because there is not enough room for him....He is great every other way...he eats well, uses the litter box he lets me pet him....but he does not like it when I get up to do something...I can't sit in a chair all day long....when I am busy doing household work he hides in the office under the desk.  I think he is around 4-5 years old he is a mature cat....his teeth are very white no tartar.  I don't know how I will ever get him to the vet again.  He does not try to get out of the house...he sits and looks out the doors and watches the birds.  I just don't understand this bizarre behavior when I try to get up....I will try the treats...that is a good idea...maybe that will entice him off my lap.  We have a lot of wild cats in our development....we had a mother and kittens we trapped the mother and had her spayed the kittens were all adopted.  The mother could not be adopted she was really wild.  This cat that I have lived in the sewer near the clubhouse and only came out at night to eat.  I felt badly for him and knew no one would take him....that is why he is with me.  He is really doing well I trapped hm right the week before superstorm Sandy hit the area.  I guess he is doing really well compared to what I read about feral cats.  Thanks for your help.

this isn't a permanent solution but don't forget that cats can be immobilized by securely grabbing the scruff of their neck. I wouldn't want to do this as a habit, but if you're sitting and need to get up  in a really big hurry it could save you a bite or two

actually no. I mean my cats get irked if I'm petting them and I stop, but I've never even heard of a cat getting mad and biting/scratching. that sounds like a cat with an aggression problem.

But I'm sure there are other people that will give you good advice.

Thank you I am glad my sister found your site....I am at a loss with my cat.  I trapped him right before hurricane Sandy hit and he has been adjusting to the house and me ever since.  He is finally coming downstairs and staying down here.  He goes into the room that is my office and sleeps under the desk.  He only comes out at night and eats and uses the litter box.  I think he is doing really well for a trapped cat.  He is altered and eats well. He is getting used to me....only one problem he wants me to sit down all the time.  He gets upset when I walk around the house doing things and runs into the office to hide.  He will sit on my lap but gets upset when I want him to get down.  He growls and once scratched me.  I think I tried to get him down when he was deeply asleep and he was frightened.  He does not want me to get up....he wants to sit on my lap and get petted.  Someone on the site suggested using treats to get him down.  I am going to try that tonight....maybe that will help.  He lived in the sewer near my clubhouse he came out at night and ate near my back door.  We had a mother cat and kittens which were all adopted...the mother cat could not be adopted she was too wild she was spayed and released.  This cat no one wanted...he is older, black with green/yellow eyes male, very tall.  He probably belonged to someone because he was altered.  I am not a cat person....but I am trying to be.   I could use all the help and advice you can give me.  The vet clipped his ear do all vets do this to identify feral cats????  Thank you.

excellent!

i guess that is why they call it "kitty crack" lol

“And how do you know that you're mad? "To begin with," said the Cat, "a dog's not mad. You grant that?" I suppose so, said Alice. "Well then," the Cat went on, "you see a dog growls when it's angry, and wags it's tale when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad.” ― Lewis Carroll
