Poor Pepper has been having a little ear trouble. She has a watery discharge that dries into kind of a grainy glob in her fur. It will occasionally have a little pink tinge to it, but that has been mostly from her scratching it, I think. It smells like rotten fish. I have been trying to help relieve the sloshing in the ear by holding with ears side down and wiping the inside of the outer ear dry. I will take her to the vet if I have to, but she is so traumatized by the carrier and car ride that she has had to be sedated just to be examined. My vet is semi retired and quite elderly, but he is a wonderful, caring vet so I have to make an appointment for her to be seen, which is not always easy to work around dh's and mil's schedules.

Does anyone know what this might be? I am open to any suggestions that will not hurt her if they do not help. I love my little Pepperpot and really want to do what is best for her physical and mental well being.

She needs to see your vet.  Sounds like some sort of infection, but your vet has the equipment to examine her ear properly to work out what the problem really is.

Could be ear mites, or maybe something else, with the problem compounded by her scratching. It sounds like the ear has gotten infected. A vet visit is probably in order. At least call the vet to see if there is some OTC thing they might recommend to help clear it up. But I think a vet visit is best. Sounds like antibiotics will be needed.

If there is discharge that smells rotten it is very likely a bad ear infection. This is serious. I would call the vet ASAP.

I hope she's feeling better soon.
