It's never taken us three days to trap a feral cat for the first time. Yes, the weather has been working against us (freezing cold and snowing or sleeting). But on Christmas Eve, Tommy sat on the deck while I fed the cats. That was totally new. His face, back leg, and tail are covered in something - looks like maybe grease? One side of his face looks puffy. We got out the binoculars inside to see if we could get a better look at it, and it appears he has a scratch on his face (maybe that abscessed?). His eyes are really runny, so clearly a URI. His teeth were... "chattering." Not like excited, and not like cold - like a neurological kind of problem? Pain? And he was drooling.

So we have an injured, sick feral that needs to be sterilized. We've tried all our tricks - other than creating a "trap cave," which is what we'll be doing tomorrow if he's here. We'll be baiting it with KFC. But the trap is clean (no smell of fear or other cats), sprayed with Feliway and catnip, the bottom has been covered, we've tried our best baits - until everything was covered with snow/ice yesterday, we disguised it completely in leaves (In fact, because they were kind of frozen in clumps, we created a "leaf cave" for the trap). We've taped the mirror to the back of the thing (that was this morning) - and instead of lunging at the intruder (and he used to be pretty aggressive), he turned and ran.

The hot sardines clearly attract him - but he'll just circle the thing and sniff and sniff and sniff. He's watched several of the other cats enter the trap to eat the bait trail we left. (They're all smart enough not to step on the trip plate to get that last bit in the bowl at the far end of the trap) - so he's seen cats go in it, eat, and leave unharmed.

:dk:

He's been eating on the deck recently, so tomorrow (hopefully he'll be here) we'll try putting the trap inside a large garbage bag - all the sprays - leave the cardboard in the center down, and use the KFC. Unfortunately, we'll have to feed everyone else first so they'll disperse, otherwise they'll eat the bait trail and hang around because of the smell, and I think this deters Tommy as well. :sigh:

He's made it through at least one, and I believe two winters. He showed up this summer - but was just never here as a regular visitor until just recently. And now it's because he's in need.... but we need him in the trap to get him the vet care!

Come on, Tommy - please take the bait! We just want to get you fixed up in ALL ways. You'll be released back here to the life and territory you know!!!!!! :rub:

Vibes for you and Tommy.

You mentioned catnip, spray or dried?  I mix dried catnip with wet food and place it in the back of the trap, beyond the trip plate.

Is Tommy suspicious--maybe he'd take the bait if it was what he is use to eating.  There was a cat I was trying to trap, wouldn't take the 'good', different bait but did take the normal food I feed (Friskies).

Good luck!

I squirt a spritz of catnip spray under where the bowl gets placed.

He's definitely wary of the trap! The problem is we have no way to place it where he normally eats - under the RV. It's too tall. He doesn't like canned food, and I've not seen him eat kibble (though we really only just started leaving it out last week). Tommy's the one that likes raw (and hot sardines :lol3: ). Maybe I just ought to use his regular food....

good luck trapping him!

i had a somewhat similar scenario a few years back, when i first started getting involved in tnr/being a caretaker.

i had a cat that i had seen around a few times but he would dart off into the woods if i came within 100 feet. well, a few weeks later i see him and he was unable to put his right rear leg down. i grabbed a trap and went out to try to get him but he was able to move off into the woods. the woods are very "scrubby" so there was no way for me to even try and follow him.

fast forward a couple of weeks. late one afternoon i go out to bring food to everyone and i see him near the feeding stations.he is staying off to the back, right on the edge of the woods. it is getting dark but i can see that along with him still unable to put his leg down he has two very large open wounds, each of them at least an inch wide and three inches long. i knew that i had to trap him that night, but i had one trap and three adults and two kittens - plus him - all looking to eat dinner. i went back inside and loaded up a bunch of dishes with food, put on my headlamp, grabbed my trap and went back out. there were a few people watching me from a distance and the best description was that i looked like a sheepdog as a tried to direct all the cats toward food, but away from the trap. it took me a good hour or so of "rounding up" everyone, but eventually i was able to get him.

it was well after hours at this point, but i called up my local animal control officer (she is great!) and we did a quick assessment of him. his wounds were were not bleeding so we decided that since he was not in immediate danger we would get him to the vet first thing in the morning.

the examining vet knocked him out and determined that he got caught in something and broke his leg while freeing himself - he had a scabby wound straight across his underside. the vet said that while it is broken it is healing, he should be alright .she then cleaned up the wounds and fortunately there was no sign of infection. she gave him an antibiotic and the proceeded to alter him. he came back the next day, and was released.

here he is in all his glory -

btw, his name is limpy and he is one very big (+/- 17 lbs) baby boy.

i will keep my fingers crossed that you get Tommy very soon and he thrives after a short stay at the vet.

Trapping vibes for Tommy!   That mirror trick is interesting - it's cute that he scared himself and ran off though (well bad for trapping though).   The regular food idea makes a lot of sense to me.   Might be that if he's feeling bad that any new or different looking food is off-putting to him.

Yep, the mirror trick was the invention of a long time rescuer, on TCS known as hissy. :heart2: We've never actually had to try it before.

But I think you and Cindy are right. It really might be best just to try with his regular food.

Well, the good news is the regular food worked. The bad news is - the trip plate didn't! :argh:

BUT - now he won't be as scared to go in there. :lol3:

:sigh:

BTW, his face looks MUCH better this morning, so I'm not COMPLETELY freaking out.

...but please keep the vibes coming, that we can actually get him to the vet tomorrow!

(Obviously we're adjusting the trip plate sensitivity and the placement of the cardboard in the trap!)
