Brief history: Rescued a 3.5 week old kitten (Victor) when his stray cat mom was hit by a car near my work.  He's about 10 weeks old now.

So about 4 days ago, he was asleep on my bed (this was very late at night, Saturday @3am) and started shaking.  I thought he was just playing at first but when I looked closely he had drool coming out of his mouth and looked like he was having a seizure.  I tried to wake him up and he snapped out of it about a 30-45 seconds.  He was a little disoriented and went back to sleep.  I immediately called the emergency vet and they said to monitor him and bring him in if it happens again.  Needless to say, didnt get much sleep after that but he was fine.  Lukily he had a vet appointment for Sunday afternoon for his first set of vaccine shots.  The doctor said everything was ok (didn't run any blood tests or anything but checked his heart and weight and temperature) and gave him his first set of shots.  He said a seizure in a cat this young is usually a bad sign (FIP).

So today (Monday) everything was fine, and he just woke up and ate and I was playing with him (chasing a feather thing on a stick) and right in the middle of chasing after it, he had another seizure.  This time there was no drooling and and it appeared like his limbs went rigid and his mouth was shaking.  I wrapped him up and just waited it out and about 20 seconds later he came to.  He looked slightly disoriented again but just went back to playing about 3 minutes after the episode (and by playing I mean being his normal spaz / hyper self, running around).  I'm making an appointment after Xmas but wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing?

I'm still confused if he is having seizures or syncopy.  He has never lost his bowel movement during any of them, and only the first time he seemed to get really sleepy (but it was 3am which is normally his bed time).  I'm definitely changing his diet -- he's still on canned KMR (kitten formula) and Fussie Cat wet food (only brand he seems to like).  The KMR I've been giving to him since he was 3.5 weeks, so I'm wondering if this could be from the wet food / Fussie cat (which is mostly seafood/tuna) since its been in his diet for about a week or two now.  I've also heard it could be caused from too much sodium or low blood sugar, but I'm just guessing and hoping for some easy answer.  Any insight into the difference between a seizure or syncope episode would be appreciated!

I would guess it seems like a mild form of epilepsia.  If it doenst goes worse he should live on a good troublesome live, at least if he is a inside only cat.

There are also medication if the epilepsia do goes worse.

(The vet mentioned a possibility of FIP. My guess it wasnt his main guess, as he wouldnt probably care to give him vaccines.  A cat with oncoming FIP doesnt need the extra stress of vaccines. Better to abstain and hope for the best.)

Good you keep in touch with your vet.

What sort of kmr do you use?   The brand of KMR?   It isnt known for such side effects.

(there is at least one another brand who might).

Anyway, at 10 weeks it is not longer necessary, as long he gets good kitten food.

Syncope, is it what is commonly known as fainting?   Like ladies are supposed to do when they see, say an naked man, or a mouse?  :)    Or teenage girls are sometimes prone to.

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

He was guessing at FIP, but its cause/detection is completely unknown.  Until I get every other test done (sodium levels, kidney check, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc) I'm not going to accept FIP as a possibility.  I doubt its the KMR (yes brand is KMR with the white kitten on the front), like I said above if anything its that brand of wet food I've been feeding him for a few weeks now.

And feline syncope: http://www.petplace.com/cats/syncope-in-cats/page1.aspx  or  http://www.helium.com/items/1547737...ing-in-cats-lack-of-blood-flow-lack-of-oxygen.  I was guessing at this since he was running around full force (mostly in circles chasing the toy) when he just collapsed.  I'm just wondering if anyone else has a cat with this and what (if any) is the distinction between this and a seizure?
