Hi, I have 2 cats that are both 6. They are indoor cats except they have a little fenced in play yard they go in. Is it still important keep getting their shots even though they stay inside? Just curious..

Thanks!

The current AVMA/AAHA recommendations for vaccines for indoor cats are: rabies every 3 years (or whatever local law dictates) and FVCRP "no more often than once every 3 years" (which could mean every 5 years or every 7 years or no boosters after the first, etc.). There's NO reason for any other vaccine (such as FeLV) for indoor cats. So any vet vaccinating more often than that is ignoring the guidelines, which are in place for a reason. Vaccinating too often can cause a lot of health problems.

Thanks so much Willowy!! I appreciate your answer. I didn't want them to get shots for no reason since they are under " lock and key" and heavily guarded hahaha.

I just found this site today and its great..

Thanks again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

My cats are (effectively) indoor-only - my back garden is fenced in - but I keep them up-to-date as firstly I show and up-to-date vaccines are required for that, and secondly I have to board them from time to time and again up-to-date vaccines are required.

I got taken to hospital a few years back under a blue flashing light and was in for 10 days, thankfully the excellent local cattery had room and a friend took them there for me.  I had another emergency admission after I'd been home for about 2 1/2 weeks.

So think about these issues as well - if you fall ill is there someone reliable who can come in and look after them at the drop of a hat, or do you live with people who can?  And what do you do with them when you go on holiday?
