Hello,  My recently adopted cat Ju-ju has 3 dry patches of skin, 2 abover her eyes, 1 if her toes which is bald.  I took her to the vet, and they did a skin scraping and cultured it, results are negative for ringworm.  any ideas of what it could be, the vet didn't seem concerned

and we don't have a follow up appointment until Jan 5th.  She is in isolation now, and I was applying otc ringworm cream on the patches.

She is in quaranteen and I feel so bad for her

thanks

David

Gosh, I have no idea, but if the Vet doesn't seem concerned, is there any other reason for her to be in quarantine?  I'm guessing you have other animals that you are worried about?  Did your Vet say she seems healthy other than these mysterious dry patches?

What are you feeding her? Grains can do this to kitties and can cause very bad skin allergies. She could also have an allergy to a specific protein like chicken.

Thank you for the replies, I just got her 2 weeks ago, she had it when I got her, she doesn't seem to be scratching.  I am feeding her Royal Canine kitten food ( hard)  and nutro natural choice kitten soft.  I am not sure what she had in the shelter.  The vet didn't seem overly concerned, she didn't suggest a sooner appointment,  Is there a good allergy food I should switch to.

thanks

Get her off the RC and Nutro food and get her onto something grain free like Natural Balance, Nature's Variety, Evo, etc. NO grains is the key! Those foods you have her on now are full of them. Grains are carbs that turn to sugar and cats have no nutritional need for grains. It's causing all kinds of health issues for cats these days.

Well if it's really allergies it will take quite awhile for it to get out of her system. Weeks! So be patient unless you see things getting worse but try something other than chicken since a lot of times that's a culprit. Duck, venison, lamb, rabbit, those are all good ones. But I'm guessing within a week you'll see somewhat of a difference, again if it is allergies. She may be itching less and you'll see a difference in her fur.

Royal Canin is an overpriced bag of corn in a bag that looks scientific and gourmet. I might feed it to a hamster but not my cats. They have no use for corn and it  is a likely allergen for cats.

I thought it could take a few weeks to confirm for sure if a skin/hair culture was ringworm. Is your vet already sure?

Whether it is an allergy or ringworm I would still get off the Royal canin.

I hope shes better soon.

Any new pictures?

Glad it's not ringworm. In my opinion Blue Wilderness is better than Royal Canin. If you are trying to help an allergy you might want to try Natural Balance. They have limited ingredients and I have heard duck, venison and rabbit are less likely to cause allergies. I think Blue also has a duck or venison version if you want to try that.

It's true, you will get a lot of different opinions on food. But if you think about the fact that a cat's natural diet consists of meat/protein and not carbohydrates it's easier to pick foods. You want high protein/ low carbs with the least artificial ingredients. You want real meat as the first ingredients instead of corn or grains (just like a cat's natural diet in the wild). Wet food is much healthier than dry. Dry food is kind of like feeding a meat eater cereal.

Just my 2 cents.

I-highly,recommend-you-try-Blue-Wilderness.I-feed-the-chicken-dry-and-chicken-and-turkey-wet.Its-grain-free-by-product-free,gluten-free,soy-free.

It-makes-their-fur-soft-and-shiney,and-eliminates-dry-skin.I-haunt-the-Blue-Buffalo-FB-site,and-I-see-many-posts-from-other-pet-parents,cat-and-dog,who-say-the-same-thing.

I-suspect,the-dry-skin,is-due-to-what-you-are-feeding.Grains-and-glutens-cause-all-kinds-of-health-issues.By-products-are-the-left-over-anything-from-the-animal,including-the-4D,and-including-euthinized-cats-and-dogs,and,their-collors.

Royal-Canin-is-full-of-them,and,Nutro......all-I-can-say,is-to-do-a-search-on-it,and-have-the-tissues-handy.

If-the-kitty-does-not-have-ringworm,and-I-don't-know-anything-about-it,don't-put-ringworm-cream-on-her,and,never,use-any-over-the-counter-products,unless-directed-so,by-the-vet.It-can-kill-them.

oh the conflicting info
I just bought natural balance, Hopefully it will help her, I will give her 1 month on it and switch to blue buffalo if need be.  The ringworm cream is vet approved,  I wouldn't just put anything on.  I have discontinued that because she doesn't have it.

Good luck with the new food. I hope it helps her. Just change it over slowly so it doesn't upset her stomach. Just add a little bit to her old food for about a week before you completlely change to the new one.

I hope I'm not confusing. In my opinion a wet diet is best. However, if you were asking which dry food might help with allergies I would try the Natural Balannce Venison or Duck. I say this because they have less ingredients, therefore less things to be allergic too. Also, duck and venison are less likely to cause allergies in cats. They make wet food too. I think you mentioned you also feed canned.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone,  Ju Ju was switched over yesterday, no diarreha, I should have waited and did it slowly but want to see if her problem clears up or gets better before her next vet appointment.

Ju ju has been in quaranteen for 2 weeks, just a gate so she can see the other cats and dogs,  Yesterday she managed to climb 2 gates so the quaranteen is over,  she was playing with the dogs and cats,  They get along well and I think the 2 weeks was all that any off them can stand.
