Hi! I'm a new member and new cat owner. I got my first pets (as an adult) this summer and hope to learn from other cat owners here. My boyfriend and I got a gray tabby Devon Rex boy (Walter, now 6 months old) and a black DSH girl (Kima, about 9 months). They are both extremely affectionate and good playmates together. We haven't had many problems -- Kima had a URI from the pound and has one bad habit (which we encouraged at first) that catsite members helped me solve yesterday. Otherwise it has been smooth sailing. But since we're brand new at this, we've found catsite threads really helpful.

Here is our latest challenge: Walter's body rejected his microchip. After the vet removed it and advised us against trying to reinsert one, we bought a collar. We got the snap-detachable kind and it comes off the second the cats start playing. I've looked at elastic collars but read that they pose safety risk. We definitely need a collar on this guy; he is just too curious about the outdoors to not have ID on him in case he gets out.

What are your experiences with different kinds of collars? Any you prefer?

I have clicky ones for my cats, but they are reajustable, so when they grow i can make the coller bigger, or smaller, and they wasnt that expensive, i live in the uk, they were only a £1, and so far they are the best we've had because we havnt had to get new ones since. Try getting one of them with a tag that has your name and number. Because then when they get bigger, you can resize it without buying a new one :) hope that helps.

I've used those too, and lost a few from Elsa losing hers outside, but never just from roughhousing. Could it be too tight or too loose?

It could be too loose, when you put the coller on them, make sure you can only fit 2 fingers under it.
I know my mums cat pj is the same, he just dosnt like them! Even takes them off the other two she has.
But if they can take them off they are probab.y too loose. I've only just managed to get Optimus in one, we've had him about 3/4 weeks and he's still really timid. But i've found the ones you can ajust the size of are sooo much better because if you see them messing around tring to take it off, you can make it smaller :)
just do the 2 finger test, if you can fit more than 2 fingers under, its too big, hope this helps :)

I don't know much about collars, but wanted to say hi and welcome you to the site.  I would love to see pictures of your cats.
