Hi all,

A few days ago, I noticed Monet developed acne on his chin. I left it alone, but noticed it a bit worse today, so I cleaned his chin with antibacterial soap. he's been using stainless steel dish and water bowl (but I've been bad about cleaning it daily. oops)

The other day, i also noticed the fur around his scruff seemed.. greasy.. kinda like sweat on his fur. It wasn't severe, but I noticed it. I wonder if this was part of his acne on his chin?

Today the greasy scruff it isn't bad, actually, better, but still feels a little off. He's on raw food, though for a week while I was out recovering, he was on canned food to make it easier for the pet sitter.

Any ideas to why this is? he's been grooming normally, even Cassie's been helping him too.

Has he had a check up lately? Any other unusual activity like eating less, peeing or pooping differently, etc.

no, everything else is the same with him as box and eating habits. No changes in the household (Except with me being sick and recovering.. I think he may be a bit more affectionate because of that).

He hasn't had a checkup in a year.. he is due for one, but I am waiting to see if I need iodine treatment.. if I do, he'll be boarded at the vet and he'll get his checkup then. I'd rather pay once at the vet than twice, especially since he gets so terribly stressed at the vet! This won't happen till after new years.

I am wondering maybe he got into something that made him greasy that day. He is much better today, but still feels 'damp' ish.. which could've gone unnoticed easily, but since I was looking for it, I felt it.

Hmmm, well if there's a chance he's not grooming then there is something wrong. Cats don't stop grooming unless there's an issue. I'd try and make that check up appointment soon if you can. Sounds like he needs to be seen by the vet and have the vet look at this.

What are you feeding him? He should be on grain free wet food. He could be having an issue with his food.

Raw. He's on raw food.

Last week he was on Trader Joe's grain free since I was out for the week and made it easier for the pet sitter to feed the kitties.

Maybe that's it then? It could be the sudden change in diet if that's the case. As long as he's back on the raw keep an eye on it and see if his fur starts to go back to normal. There could have been something in the Trader Joe's food that caused him to get oily all of a sudden.

That implies he has been diagnosed with an over-active thyroid.  Greasy fur is common in cats with that condition.
No, not him. Me. I had thyroid cancer and I have yet to see if I, me, need the treatment. If I do, the cats will have to be boarded as they can't be around me. Sorry for the confusion!

Hi,

in case this hasn't gone away yet, greasy fur is an early symptom of CKD in cats - I'd suggest taking him to the vet. HOpe it is not this, but get it checked out quick.
