My cat is 2 years old. She eats, poops, drinks, plays normally and has a beautifil coat. She is very healthy but since she was a baby she always has had bad breath. She has had good checkups but I forgot to ask about the stinkyness. Anyway, pardon the gross description but it smells like a mix of sulphur and hot tuna? Her teeth look relatively clean with a little Tartar. Is this the source of the problem or should I be worried of something serious. I also read somewhere that some cats are just naturally stinky so could that be it too?

Do the checkups include the vet lloking at her teeth?  Best thing if you are concerned is another vet visit.

The three biggest causes of bad breath that I can think of are the food you feed, mouth issues, and kidney issues.

As your cat is young, I would suspect mouth or food is the cause.

I think one of my cats has stinky breath, and at his last Vet visit I mentioned it to the Vet.  She thought I was crazy!  She looked in his mouth extra carefully, smelled his breath, checked for everything she could think of and said she couldn't even smell anything (thus thinking I was crazy).

So...maybe his breath is really normal for a cat?
I say this only because you've said he has good check-ups, and normally they DO check their teeth, so have to get pretty close and would notice (IMHO) if they had worse breath than they should.

Tooth problems are common causes of bad breath. But bad breath can also be a sign of liver problems, so if it is persistent and really, really bad, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a vet.

'Bitz has what I think is bad breath. I've asked the vet if a dental is in order. He said there were no issues with her mouth or teeth and that a dental was not in order :happy3: She eats the same thing the other cats do and their breath does not "smell". She's a happy, healthy kitty so whaddya' do :rub:

Thanks for all of your responses! I bought some feline Tartar control toothpaste yesterday and I am going to see how it works!

We use T/D (tooth diet). Our cat easts them up like treats and they really help keep her teeth clean.

My cat's breath are not so great but their teeth are fine and they're in great health. It pretty much smells like the food they eat and one of them has worse breath than the other. But again, the vet said all is well. Honestly I think anyone would have gross breath if you ate the food they eat and licked your butt all day.
